NOTE:
"... fishing villages along Newfoundland's rocky shores became known for producing a hardy strain of water dogs. By the mid-1800s, Newfoundland's retrievers were in high demand for their intelligence and strong swimming ability. As a result of this popularity, Newfoundland is the origin of several modern retrievers." Bill Nichol, Born to Hunt:

each walk should pick up where other left off. If he was staying for 30 secs when you finished last time. Begin at 20 this time, then a 30 and maybe a 45.To begin just have him lay by your feet. GENTLY lay him down, show him your hand and say STAY. Wait required time, then praise him and move on.Dont make it any harder than that

Start walking him. Everywhere, side roads, fields, woods roads, everywhere. this will begin to get you in shape for Sept and develope a working bond with your dog.( he is a pack animal and walking with you is working in the pack for him) On walks do some on leash and off. Have him sit, heel, stay.( all should be initailly done while leash is on) Be patient and gentle. Remember, puppy always succeeds, it should be fun for both of you. And end on positive notes.
Be calm, don't order your dog, show your dog. Repeat over and over but stop if you sense he is getting bored.Mix training with his favorite toy or treats. At end of walk toss him a few tennis balls or whatever he likes. he will soon look forward to the walks and the work thats being done .

at 8 months he is more than ready to begin preparation.Theres lots you can do right now. Start with obedience training. In Nfld your not allowed to legally take him in hunting areas til Sept. That means you'll only have a couple weeks to have him on barrens before you will want to take the gun.Its my opinion that you cannot train and hunt at same time.So most of your prep work has to be done before you pick up gun.

as a pup its important he understand exactly what you want. be consistant. Never give a command you cannot enforce. Dont call him, if your not 100% sure he will come. Its better to keep your mouth shut.

ALWAYS speak calmly to your dog, never repeat a command unless your dog is 'Learning" once learn , never repeat, or shout , bawl at your dog. He is not deaf, he can hear your . A good rule is, you should have the demeanor you want your dog to have. and thats Calm. If the dog dont know its because you havent showed him and he does not understand.
if you have a pup, have him work for treats, a weiner is a great tool to teach a dog, to come, or sit.or down.

For me I enjoy the training as much as the hunting. Depending on the effort you want to put into training, you can have you dog pointing firmly before he ever sees a partridge. But it takes a little work. Its not a lot but I find its more than most people want to take. How old is your dog.
Most important thing with a dog is to take him for walks, everyday. This sets the stage for you and him as a team. Second work on obedienceSIT COME HEEL and STAY.( never rough up your dog EVER). Respect and fear are two different things. Fear and the dog listens when he is close. Respect and he will listen a mile away.
Think about it, a point is just a stay when he smells birds. I have trained Dobermans to point.
