NOTE:
"... fishing villages along Newfoundland's rocky shores became known for producing a hardy strain of water dogs. By the mid-1800s, Newfoundland's retrievers were in high demand for their intelligence and strong swimming ability. As a result of this popularity, Newfoundland is the origin of several modern retrievers." Bill Nichol, Born to Hunt:

 How old is he?

You should not let your dog out of the indoor kennel until he is not doing his business in the kennel. If he is doing it in the kennel you need to take him out more often to relieve himself. A dog usually does not want to urinate or defecate where they sleep. I had to get up at night to bring my dogs out side. If the kennel is too big he will pee in it more readily because he can sleep in another corner, so the question, believer it or not is whether he has too much room. Put a divider in it and make it bigger as he grows. If you have him out of the kennel in a house you must be ready to grab him the very second he is going to pea or poo. Nothing more annoying than being interrupted partway through relieving yourself. He will learn when you do that a few times. If you don't catch him just in time he is learning that it is okay. If you can't get to him you are too far away from him and he should be in his kennel. I have had to grab my dog part way through one of those bowel movements and run him outside. My dogs have learned very quickly to wait until they are out doors. There is no need to hit or punish, the measures you need to take that I described  will get him to realize what needs to be done and where. This should be learned within a few days if you are always ready to run him outside.

I am not following.......train who the person or the pigeons? Unless they know about planted birds you should keep looking <SMILE> Better off walking your legs off to find wild birds then using planted birds unless you really know what you are doing. That is just IMO and I train a lot of dogs every year and use planted birds all of the time.

thanks for the information! i do have someone helping me to train them aswell !

a planted bird has an escape distance of zero....this means that the dog can catch them. If using planed birds you must be very careful that the dog does not catch them if the dog catches birds the pointing instinct gets less and less as he/she thinks that they can catch the bird. So you either keep the dog on a rope (CC) or you use electronic release release traps so that you can make the bird fly like a wild bird. It is my belief that unless you know what you are doing with planted birds of any kind you are better off either seeking help or staying away from them all together IMO.

what kind of problems do you mean ?

Comment by Ken Dinn on October 18, 2012 at 9:00am

If you use pigeons be careful...... you can cause problem with planted birds of any kind if  you do not know what you are doing. The smell makes no difference it is that they can not escape.
