Avalon Trapping Questions

After watching some videos of trapping various animals, I have become quite interested in it.  I live in Whitbourne, and I have never trapped animals, outside of snaring rabbits and grouse, and I have some rookie questions.

 

Im wondering if there are any decent areas close by to trap?  when using the dirt hole traps, what do you anchor the trap onto?  what do you use for bait? what do you do with the animals after you trap them? sell the skins?  do you need to put out trapping signs?  where do you get the traps?

 

any info from expierenced trappers or from someone who knows the rules and regs, tips and tricks is greatly appreciated!

I am interested as well! Even though I won't get the chance to get at it this year, I have been wondering about some of those same questions. Do you need a special license to trap?

reading another thread here, if there is water and woods near by, there is something to trap. of course there is both. I have seen foxes, mink, and there have been cotyote sightings in the area. id love to know where to get the animal traps, and how to set up the dirt hole traps for predators. Im ok with the weasel traps, and they look like large rat traps, and the mink traps i have seen videos here, just dont know where to get the traps.

I trapped in that area for many years. I little bit of trivia, pretty much all the mink in Nfld originated from the mink farms in Whitbourne area in the 60s.
Mink, fox,otter and mushrats are common and now I guess coyotes, theres a scattered lynx around as well.
My first suggestion would be to do the trapper ed corse which is now required ( and a worthwhile course) to get a license. it will answer many of your questions.

Thanks! I was thinking there was some sort of license required.. Is going about the trapper ed course the same as your hunter ed course? I am more interested in the smaller animals, I can't see myself making away with a fox stuck on by his paw... :S What do people do with the pelts and animals after? Is it worthwhile to sell them?

The course will take you through all that. remember that its important to be an thical trapper and that involves using the right gear, being humane and learning to handle the pelts properly. Trappers need to be aware that the world is watching and we should learn from the mistakes of sealers.

Theres a lot of work to trapping, many animals ( beaver and otter for example) can takes hours to properly prepare for sale.

Do the course and also join the trappers assoc. They meet every year for convention on second last weekend of August
