A 14-year-old Nova Scotia boy is recovering from coyote bites to his leg and buttock after he was attacked by an aggressive animal while on a Cape Breton trail on Tuesday night. The Department of Natural Resources said the teenager was riding a dirt bike, and had dismounted, when he was attacked on a trail near Sydport Industrial Park in the Westmount area of Cape Breton. He was checked out by health officials and his wounds are not considered serious, the department said Wednesday in a news release.Terry Power, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Natural Resources, told CBC News the boy managed to fight off the animal and took off on his bike.Power said he interviewed the victim and his father and it's not clear what prompted the attack."It's difficult to explain, quite frankly. We visited the site, we do look for something in the area that might explain what took place. For example, coyotes have been known to defend a kill quite aggressively," said Power."We looked for that…Continue

I am very glad that there is a moose petition being circulated on this site, it might be the only way we hunters could have a voice. I am disappointed in the wording of the petition statement however. It is not clear in terms of what we want. "Protection from mismanagement" is a good start but it needs to state how it is mismanaged and what would good management look like other wise there is no directive in the petition. And to be "protected from propaganda," that is also a good idea but the same problem. What kind of propaganda are we not liking and what would we like to see. If I were to pass this petition around I would constantly need to do a lot of explaining and then it would just be my opinion not necessarily the opinion of the petition. We definately need some sort of philosophical unity on this, some sort of definition of what we mean when we sign this. Politicians really need to see something measurable in these statements. It would be a far better use of this effort if…Continue

I am slightly confused about the purpose of this petition. Do you actualluy believe in the propaganda related to Terry French's comments of the declining moose population ( which is blatantly obvious to just shut up everyone involved in the "governments responsibility of moose accidents".) ....or is this petition designed for the true Newfoundland outdoorsman who wishes to see equal hunting opportunities for all. If it is for the first action then count me out, i'll wait for a wildlife biologist to appear on my television screen instead of Terry French. My moose licence application was filled out and gone on day one.Continue

It must be very frustrating for many when reading reloading manuals and articles from sports writers who talk about ammunition and firearms and reloading videos that refer to such things as " muzzle energy" and then go on to say that muzzle energy can be calculated by using the formula E=MV2, while others say E=1/2 MV2. Manufacturers , on the other hand , don't mention it at all. Perhaps it is because they don't want you to know what is junk and what is not. In the first instance it would appeat to be a closely guarded secret , and in the second I have to wonder if , in fact , they actually know what they are talking about at all. Here is an example: My 30.06 fires a 180gr. bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2700fps. That's simple enough to calculate , " or is it " ,lets take a look shall we. Here is the calculation as it is suggested .M =180 X v 2700= 486000 X 2700= 1312200000. So there you have it , even a child could figure it out, it reads ONE BILLION ONE HUNDRED TWENTY TWO MILLION…Continue

There were a few anxious pet owners and school administrators in the centre city area of St.John's today. A coyote was spotted running around Penneywell, Prince of Wales Street and Empire Avenue among other streets in the area. At one point, police advised Bishop Field Elementary on Bond Street to keep students inside as a precaution unless accompanied by an adult. Paradise Elementary had a similar encounter a few weeks ago but in that situation, the coyote was actually on the school grounds.Eileen, who lives on Old Penneywell Road, told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that she's going to think twice before allowing her small dog out in the backyard on his own.Continue

A local biologist from MUN is calling the current "Coyote Question" debate a textbook example of the politicization of science....and the real question is; why were samples of an animal shot near Bonavista earlier this year sent out of the province for further analysis?Dr. Steve Carr says questions about the genetic identity of the animal have become so politicized that he feels it's time to review the genetic science involved. He says few, if any, people who have seen pictures of the 82 pound animal believe it is a coyote. Carr says Environment Minister Terry French is reported as saying he has 'conflicting reports' on the animal's genetics. Carr says the truth is, if it is a hybrid, the scientific answers might not be as simple as some might hope. He says the diagnosis is complicated by the extremely complex history of reintroduction, invasion, and hybridization among wolves and coyotes in eastern North America, including Newfoundland. Carr says MUN and the province have the…Continue
