Ice Fishing 2019 - Avalon/St. John's Vicinity

Does anybody have any info on ice thickness/safety as of opening day, Today, Feb. 01/19? I have called Paddy's Pond Forestry - No info. Called Red Cross - can't get to speak to anyone. Can't contact Rovers SAR either. Any info or who to call would be great.

ASP Recommends Halting Food Fishery In Light Of Declining Cod Stocks

The Association of Seafood Producers is calling for an end of the food fishery in light of declining cod stocks.

The ASP made the recommendation as part of its proposal to DFO’s management plan.

Despite the moratorium, the latest science shows that cod stocks have failed to recover from levels they were when the moratorium was imposed over 20 years ago.

N.L. lowers legal hunting age to 12, improves access for hunters with disabilities

In an effort to get more young people out hunting, Newfoundland and Labrador is lowering the minimum age for both small and big game licences.

The new age limits were announced Friday along with other changes to the Wildlife Act and regulations, including efforts to help those with disabilities have better access to hunting and angling.

The minimum age to shoot small game, coyotes and other furbearing animals has been lowered from 16 to 12, and the minimum age to shoot big game…

Any Progress on the .17 HMR Rimfire?

Hey guys i have been wondering if anyone has heard if there has been anything decided on the .17 HMR rimfire or if we are going to be able to use them anytime soon?...it's a dandy little gun for spot and stalk rabbit hunting and is a real tack driver compared to a .22LR , I have one and i have hunted with mine in alberta a few years ago.

semi Auto Shot guns and more. must read

The government has to put in to have all semi Auto gun be put under restricted fire arms. Let's hope that don't happen. If it does rod and gun club and complete gun smith will make million every year. And let's not forget the government as well.

fresh water duck hunting

New to duck hunting so just inquiring about a few things.

Went to coastal looking for black duck decoys but they didn't have any. So I bought mallards, is this still alright?

Would people recommend making your own blind or buying one?

Two Men Accused of Shooting Moose from the TCH in the Middle of the Night

Two men from Wareham, Bonavista Bay are facing charges after allegedly shooting a moose on the Trans Canada in the middle of the night. Wildlife officers received numerous complaints last Friday night, September 11th, the night before the official start of the hunting season of possible night hunting along the TCH.

 

RCMP also fielded complaints that same night about vehicles impeding traffic.

MOOSE / CARIBOU/PTARMIGAN/BEAVER/PORCUBINE/ JERKY RECIPE:

For approx 5 lb meat:

2 pks Teriyaki Sauce mix ( Can purchase at Canadian Tire)

2 pks Jerky cure (Kosher Salt) in same pack as Teriyaki Sauce mix.

Dissolve Kosher Salt in 1/4 cup of boiling water.

1 tsp Lemon Pepper

4 tsp Black Pepper

4 tsp Garlic Powder

4 tsp Onion Powder

1 oz Soy Sauce

2 oz. Rye Whisky (Gibson's Finest)

Add 1 beer slowly to curing mix and stir until all beer froth gone.

Put sliced meat in a bag…

RECIPE FOR SMOKE SALMON / TROUT:

  1. Fillet fish: Do not wash fish before adding dry brine.
  2. Combine the following ingredients in a bowl and mix with your hand, sprinkle generously on thick fillets and lightly on thin fillets.
  3. Sprinkle a little dry brine mix on bottom of bowl and layer fillets in bowl and sprinkle brine on each layer of fillets.
