Five cases of rabies have now been confirmed in animals killed in Labrador, and an investigation is underway into two other possible cases. The confirmed cases include a wolf, red fox, and dog, all found in the Lab City area, a two separate red foxes, one found near Hopedale, the other near Voisey's Bay.
The animals were tested between January 25th and March 2nd. A single case was reported in Labrador last year. The last major outbreak was in 2012 when there were 16 confirmed cases in the region.
Government officials say current ice conditions mean there is a possibility for infected animals to cross from Labrador onto the island and they're encouraging people to be vigilant and report any animals behaving strangely.
