I can"t point you to a good breeder but ,,,,make sure you only look at hunting stock, very important,,many are bred for the fo fo pet\companion market. good luck....lorne
I bought mine from a woman out in Normans Cove who breeds them, cant rember the name of the kennel though. I have her trained for ducks and have yet to drop one she could not find and as for the temperment anyone who knows the dog can tell you how friendly it is with everyone she meets. The most important thing is the blood line, make sure you get one whos parents are certified with good hips and a clean bill of health.
I would also be looking and asking the breeder for health certificates. There are a lot of people breeding labs but most are not breeders. Be sure to find a breeder who has brood stock with good hips and clear eyes. LOTS of health issues with LABS .
And I second getting a dog from proven hunting stock
After taking care of a close friend's 4.5 month old labrador, let me tell you, you have your work cut out for you.
These dogs are extremely bright and intelligent, but they are very rebellious.
Have fun.
Exercise is the key. Especially with sporting dogs. They need to to be taken out and run a couple times a day for at least 30 mins. Otherwise they will become bored and usually find trouble.
Letting them run in a big fenced back yard is not the same especially at that age. The need the interaction with people. Also they should be off leash and running.
At 4.5 months, these walks are just as important as food.
If you interested in a different type of dog try a Nova Scotian Duck Tolling Retervier will reterive as good as a lab but he has some extra duties. Do some research you may be amazed!
I have to agree with fred, sometimes people forget\ or just don't realize ,pups are not adult dogs.the exercise required for any mut is large, but for a pup from a hunting breed is sometimes to the roof. for example when my dd was young 3- 5 months old ,i would take him with my brittany for a 4-5 hour run when we got back home he look at me as if to say- when are going to get some exercise around here...lol
I looked around for a long time after my Lab Sandy died from natural causes after 17 years and one always checked with SPCA here and Nova Scotia to see what they had when this day got a call from them they had 2. went looked at them and I came home with Maggie a beautiful choc lab, very easy to train and loves to please cost me approx 300 to get her home spayed and needles etc Shes is now the family pet as well as a great hunter and retreiver. She goes with me almost everywhere. If you are looking for a "dog" whos looking for a good home why not check it out anyway, you could be pleasantly surprised!
Maggies pic is my avatar; what do you think; she is as smart as she looks?
Mac, maybe things have changed, but i 1994 i went to the spca in stjohns to see what they had in a pup, or young dog for my son.they had a young male Beagle or B,, cross ,so we got talking to the woman in charge,i made a comment about weather he be any good for rabbits ;[;;;;[;;; she went nuts ,going on about all the beagle abuse from hunters and that no dog goes out of that spca for hunters,,,,,,,so i got the hell out of their and never looked back.,,im not panting all of them with the same brush,,but that one put a bad taste in my mouth.
yeah you have to close your ears to some of them but they do have access to some nice dogs. I cold have had black one from NS too at the time this elderly couple were looking for good home, papers and needles up to date. Already had Maggie not sorry she is a very smart and good one. Lucked into it there!
I agree with you 100 % if there is a dog to adopt its the right thing to do, way to many doge get abandoned because people dont know what they are getting into. Beagles are always a touchy sublect with people because there is such a high number of them that do get abandoned and left to fend for them selves, the beagle i have now was found wandering the roads 3 days after the season was over, no colar or id at all.
