Let's stick to the Facts and not let emotion run rampant. The facts as I see it is that it is an expensive venture that did nothing to prevent the crimes it was supposed to! But, What do think?

URGENT COMMUNICATION TO ALL CSSA MEMBERS

Your action needed immediately!

Dear Member,

Liberal M.P. Mark Holland (Ajax-Pickering) has presented a motion to return Private Members' Bill C-391 to the House of Commons with a recommendation to reject the legislation that would scrap the long-gun registry.

In late May, the federal Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security heard 33 witnesses over two weeks with widely dissenting opinions on the efficacy of the registry. Police officers countered each other with opposing views on the registry's value as a public safety tool, and other witnesses provided strong opinions on both sides of the debate.

Rather than evaluate Bill C-391 clause-by-clause according to the committee's preset agenda, Holland wants the bill returned stillborn to the House.

This is a complete circumvention of the parliamentary process and you should be outraged. Please write a quick note to all M.P.s and demand that they follow proper parliamentary procedure on Bill C-391.

You can send an email free of charge to all M.P.s through:

Mark Holland M.P. has tabled his motion to dismiss C-391. To make matters worse, the following M.P.s are softening on their vote for the bill. They need to hear from you within the next two days. This may be our last chance to save C-391. Fax, call or send an email, particularly if you live in these ridings. Thanks.

EXACTLY!!! Any questions???
Scrap it.
The Long Gun Registry is a great program, it was started with good intentions but left to much to the new program rather than the local Firearms offices.
Now that it is in place and working they should leave it, really is everyone out there with a firearm responsible enough to have it?
Without the registry no one will know who has what firearms so when there is a problem what do they do? Ask the bad gun if he has a firearm?

How can any Government program that reduces the rights of its people be a good thing.

Tell me what it good about it, cost, solves crime..?? It has done nothing but make legitimate gun owners

sub standard canadians. and cost a pile of money. We are trying to protect ourselves against what we see on american tv.

If it was a good program it would have reduced something....from the little hill I watch from in my 50 years in bottom of trinity bay there has been one gun incident ( of course that dont include people shot by cops with mental health issues) thats wasnt a suicide.

My only question is "what are we getting with it?"
you can have your rights back.Is it just me or does anyone else think the questions asked are an ivasion of privacy.
Asking your Ex wife or girlfriend if you should be able to have a gun.

Does anyone else mind giving up your rights for search and seizure.IF you own a gun they dont even need a warrant to search your house. The fact that you own a long gun is probable cause.

Do you know that theres over 900 RCMP officers assigned to the administration of the registry. Maybe some can be assigned to work armed robberies in St Johns.

its a waste of money and serves no purpose other than villianize responsible gun owners. And does nothing to reduce crime.
I feel like Fred! The fact that it has been reported that there are 11000 hits a day to the registry is giving people a false sense of security. they believe that these "hits" mean that the RCMP are solving crimes because they are researching the registry for registered firearms involved in crimes. NOT so, these hits are caused by things like phoning up and checking on the status of your PAL, or any other firearms question. Or, if your pulled over for speeding, your license (drivers) is also connected to the registry. they are checking to see if you may have a gun. So, are they solving anymore crimes based on the registry?...NO!! another thing that gets my goat is the fact they claim that they have prevented suicides (30% no less) because of the registry! How in the heck do they quantify this?
Stop this foolish registry and put the money and police where they should be..... solving crimes!!

ED
That's crazy! They are supposed to be trained to deal with any situation! In fact, just because a house doesn't have a registered firearm doesn't mean there isn't one there! the police are supposed to treat every situation as if it could be life threatening!

I have to admit Gerald, playing devil's advocate allows one to bring out the real issues here and made me think hard! cheers, Ed

I would hope to at least  have the same rights as a person with long criminal record( rapists, pedofiles, violent offeders).especially as it pertains to search and seizure.and acceptable questions that can be asked in a questionaire.

That would be nice...as a gun owner I dont have equal rights now and I have no criminal record.

One has only to watch CBC and see how RCMP respond to a home with a registered gun inside,

"The government has admitted on three separate occasions in the past few years that since handgun registration was implemented in 1934, not one single crime in Canada has been solved using the national pistol registry," MP Breitkreuz said.

On the other hand, Canada's Ministry of Justice, in a document entitled "Self Defense in Canada," acknowledges that firearms are used about 32,000 times a year for self-protection from criminal activity. CILA cites a 1997 study by Mauser, the Simon Frazier University researcher, saying that when animal attacks that have been prevented with guns are added in, the annual self-defense number doubles to 64,000 incidents.

"If we remove suicides, which are generally considered to be non-preventable," CILA reports, "approximately 40 lives are saved for every life lost with a firearm in Canada," based on the government's 32,000 annual figure. "Consider that 44 percent of rural Canadian households own firearms, compared to 11 percent in cities. Yet the violent crime rate in Canadian cities is 40 percent higher than in rural areas."

But the government has used numbers that indicate a much more serious problem with gun-related crime. The Liberal Party, in particular, has been widely scorned for falsifying such figures to push its political agenda.
