Drahthaars are German Hunting Dogs. They are what is called a Versatile Hunting Breed in that they are capable of hunting many different ways. They are waterdogs, pointers, hounds and trackers. The principal focus being the recovery of all downed game.
Somewhat unique to the breed is that they have to tested and approved before they can be bred.
There are three tests required before your dog can be approved for breeding.According to a long established test.
The VJP which is a puppy natural ability test. It includes field searching, bird, gun sensitivity and tracking work.Handling and co operation. I call it Elementary school.( its done in the spring.)
The HZP which is tested the fall following the VJP.A more comprehensive test it adds water work. Inclides pointing, fur and feather game drags, searching, and co operation.( High School)
Breed Standard test where the dog is judged against a set of standards.
