I painted 4 dozen mallard and black duck decoys to match that of eider ducks. Works perfectly. The problem I see with making floating decoys is getting them to sit right in the water. I'd recommend painting the ones you have.

i made two back in my younger days out of 2x4 never rounded them or nothing..i think i carved the head with a chainsaw and screwed it to the board lol....painted them black..only thing it brought in was loons and a lone merganser haha..they floated well but you couldn't toss them out you had to walk out and set them upright... fooled a couple guys from Peterview who were out chasing ducks in a motorboat....iv'e had it rough on decoys since i started...had 14 painted to look like goldeneye i borrowed ...left them in the blind in a garbage bag...young fellows found them and set them adrift..years later i had 23...IGOR took 6-7 of those and a couple years later someone stole some one by one out of my duffel bag i had strapped to my quad rack i have 15 left ...5 mallard female 7 painted goldeneye and 3 teal...

People love to steal. You can't leave anything anywhere now a days, brutal.
