Been hunting coyotes since they first appeared on the island and I caught one in one of my fox snares. I am a trapper and coyote hunter and as most everyone knows the price of fur is way down so a lot of trappers are just doing it for the exercise and fun mostly not the money and so very little pressure on the coyote, fox etc and they will become as populated as mother nature will allow.
Coyote are very wiley and smart, gone at first sign of danger, and most of their hunting is done between dusk and dawn as everyone who hunts them knows and are in all of the island areas now and growing. If you do much traveling the chances of seeing one during daylight hours are slim but come nightfall things change; there it is right in front of you , one, two sometimes even five as with me. Stop the truck, turn on the cdplayer with the cd you burnt off Varmint Als website and play number 5 on mine, rabbit in distress and he comes right in; bang you blow off the smoke from top of your finger another one bites the dust!!!!!!! Imagination just kicked in again. You've all done it!
I get a nice few coyotes with the 22.250 using calls and its loads of fun especially when you gear up for it and the call pays off BUT you have to play your cards just right. Most of the stupid yotes are killed already by everyone who's packing a gun with any type of licence for game. Now moose season is over you will most likely get a better chance to bag one.
I WOULD LIKE TO GET AN OPEN SEASON FOR COYOTE HUNTING AT NIGHT .
Anyone else ? Down in some states they are doing that, so why don't we ask the gov't to look into that for us. Has anyone else made that proposal I wonder.

Woodale is a good place to start with the caribou down there and the nice farmland cows and all. There a little while ago and saw a nice bit of sign. They got good going here now too, not very much snow, so they have no problem covering their territory. Saw one yesterday daylight on a little grassy outcrop in a pond doing the scent and scratch thing and never got a shot off..friggin thing was too darn fast.....left the ground and into the trees in one jump, needs a cam on your head. Foxes are getting around too now had couple of them come lately so Im takin my 22 rim nex time. can we have 2 guns open I wonder. Im also a trapper.
I am not 100% sure but I think the second gun would have to be cased.Best check though to be sure.
If the ultra restrictive state of Calf.which I believe only allows use of non lead ammunition including in rifles, permits night hunting for varmints with lights, then why not here? As for safety concerns - well that applies whether you're hunting durning the day or night. If you don't know where the bullet will end up, don't shoot. As someone has already pointed out, shotguns with heavy shot would probably be better for night work anyway and if someone getting shot was a worry, then that likelyhood should be much less in the night when there's probably nobody in the woods as opposed to daytime when there's all manner of people out there if common sense is used.Personally I'd be much more worried durning the regular hunting seasons when there's potentially 30,000 big game hunters and as well as all the shotgunners, plus oursleves (coyote hunters) in the field. My opinion.
This nite hunting thing can be done doesnt have to be 24/7 . berry pickers are scarce now too eheh. can have nites like full moon( we called 2 in few nites ago on a bog and could have easily done both of them in if we wanted to they are not afraid to come real close even 12 guage would be good. California even alows nite hunting and they are very particular with hunting permits etc. Also several other states have nite hunts. If you see one on your rounds turn off your lights and turn on the rabbit squeaker thats in your car cd player( TRY TO GET DOWNWIND) and let her rip for awhile sometimes 10 to 15 mins bet you will get a quick look at him. On my last trip to the cabin me and the wife had 2 yotes going foolish after the rabbit in the car literally they were down in the ditch, up on road, down in ditch all around us. Skunk lure is also good! not to mention the car theft deterrent as an added bonus hey!
TRAPPERS OUT THERE CHECK OUT "'The Wild North" on utube best videos anywhere north of 60.
Same as with small game it is legal to hunt coyotes at night. It's just not legal to use any artifical light while hunting.Provincial Wildlife regulations only restrict hunting big game after dark. With this restriction (no artifical lights ) the only chance for coyote would be on a moonlit night with snow on the ground and no wind. That's pretty restrictive so it'd be better to lobby to have the Wildlife Regulations ammended to allow the use of lights while hunting coyote.
But i think there is a regulation on shooting hours, 1/2 before daylight before you shoot and a 1/2 hour after sunset
It states for "big game" and "waterfowel" for the 1/2 hour rule.
I am in full support of night hunting, and believe lights should be allowed to aid in hunting after traditional hunting hours!
