Experimental Coyote Removal
Sunday , April 22 2012
A controlled experiment will be undertaken in a restricted area on the south coast to explore the impact of coyote removal on survival rates of caribou calves. The minister responsible for wildlife, Terry French, says unlike other areas of the island where black bears are the main predators of caribou, coyotes are the predominant threat to calf survival in the Middle Ridge area. A number of snares have been baited and set by trappers as part of the project.
The snares will be checked regularly and removed from the area in mid to late May before caribou calving begins.
Island caribou populations have declined by about 65 per cent from over 90,000 in the late 1990's.
