Trapping

Trapping Administrator
Hi, I'm John Turner was born in St. John's NL in 1976 and moved to St Lawerence in 1982. I lived there for 21 years. I then moved to Marystown. I love to hunt and trap the best thing about trapping is getting out on the hills and seeing all the wild life that's around us. So if you have any questions that I can help you with, please feel free to drop me a message.

Any experienced trappers near the Glovertown area, or willing to travel to the Glovertown area, that would take a day and help show an novice trapper some tips and tricks.  Got a couple of areas where there are some coyote and otter but just can't figure out how to get 'em.  Perhaps a night at the cabin!!!

really location doesn't matter in the area just make sure that the otters or mink are in the area and are useing the brookes as a mode of getting around, shouldint be any problems in getting them to take bait once there used to the bucket or blocked area being there and then just put the trap in place wait until they return for another meal and bang. We caught 5 mink in the one area and within 2 traps last year useing a bucket

That sounds like an option that might work well given the location I am dealing with ...thanks.

Hey James im no whiz my self but my father has been traping all his life and from what i see him do is set a trap across the brooke blocking it off and makeing sure there is no way over , and my father said a 5 gallon bucket with a 220 trap in it say cut 2 slots for the trap to insert into and blend into its surroundings and block off any really open areas in the bucket say the same you would do for a mink let the bucket sit with bait for a few days to get the otter used to it and then when they take the bait every time set a trap my father gets great results with this and a few years back when he was really into trapping one fall/winter took 15 otters and dozens of mink this way

Looking for a bit of advice from the trapping whizes here. I set out a few mink boxes in the fall but that is about it. The other day, however, I noticed two otters in a huge pond. Everything I researched suggested a blind set at a feeder creek or to locate the toileting area of the otter and a drowning set. The pond is jammed tight to the water line with black spruce and impossible to access except for a small opening. I was wondering if an otter would enter a box/cubby set similar to a mink baited set except larger?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wildlife have opened the on-line application format for trapping licences for 2011-2012. The URL is www.wildlife.gov.nl.ca

Those who completed the trappers course should now be in receipt of their updated Outdoor Identification Card from the Department of Environment and Conservation. Trapping dates at URL http://www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/season_dates/trapping.html

Cheers
