For the past number of years there has been an active campaign to drastically reduce the number of moose in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. This campaign would have moose management shift away from a scientific, logic based management strategy to an emotional, fear response management strategy. The number of moose-vehicle collisions has been used to grossly misrepresent moose populations throughout the province. These numbers are being presented and decisions are being made that could adversely affect the future viability of a long held cultural tradition of going out and hunting moose for food and sport. Non-resident hunting in the province provides between $30-40 million dollars annually for provincial coffers. If one includes both direct and indirect economic benefits of hunting, from residents, then the number (conservatively) could be double that mentioned above! Thus, with a dramatic reduction in moose population there would also be a reduction in the economic spin offs from the harvesting of these animals and a large loss of employment for those involved in this type of work.
The majority of moose-vehicle collisions are preventable. People are driving at high rates of speed in poor weather, poor visibility and distracted drivers are a major issue for everyone's safety.
SOMAC, would like to see our moose hunt based on scientific data. We would like to see a sustainable moose for future generations to come.
This is a ground level movement to protect our moose from destruction.

Folks Wayne Barney was let go. Wayne is the manager for fur and game. He is the manager of all the moose and caribou surveys. He just got back from the northern Pen doing the caribou surveys and was told he's done. That leaves a rookie biologist to manage big game. The biologist is a nice young fellow but very green. Wayne will be a huge loss to what's left of the big game program. Two managers left, conservation services and licensing. Sad times

Government cutbacks, All communities that are protecting wetlands go through the Eastern Habitat Joint Venture are gone.
Trout will likely go to DFO, Wildlife is being shuffled into another department. The managers of wildlife are gone, some placed into forestry.
Wildlife made recommendations about the moose management plan but in the end it was the politicians that made the call.
The first real quota increase was a number of years ago. The minister at the time (PC) said " I want 5000 more moose licenses and I don't care where they come from". This happened the next year as well, all because of SOPAC!
The wildlife division did fight for proper management but in the end politics came before science and recommendations.
The first 5000 licenses, the only real place to take that on was the Northern Pen, then it got ugly after that...
It's amazing that the outfitters stayed quiet after that increase and are still quiet.
10000 extra licenses in 2 years, that politicians jammed down the Wildlife Divisions throat. Sopac was the driving force behind those decisions. let that sink in...
The Wildlife Division was hoping for hunters to come out and kick up a stink, we all that didn't happen.
It was the politicians that wanted the moose numbers reduced but the Wildlife Division was hoping the hunting public would show up and support the moose herd but that didn't happen. If more hunters had to show support for the moose it would have knocked Sopac back and our moose herd may not be suffering like it is now.
The Wildlife Division was never asked where to put the fencing or the flashing lights (never worked junk), transportation and works decided where to put it. (seems odd to me since the WD would be the ones with the knowledge).
It's truly sad how fast the government made knee jerk reactions to a 100 million dollar industry. It came down to votes not science.With regard to the spring hunt the WD would never approve it but it is left to the politicians now. ( Finally the hunters came together and put a stop to that before it was implemented).
Hunters were happy at first they were getting more licenses. They didn't realize what was happening until now. The population is crashing and is in dire straits. There has not been a true survey done in years and no finances are allotted to do one.
When WD was cut there was very little done with moose and government didn't want to know the numbers, they don't care.
Eugene is even complaining about the caribou population on the Northern peninsula.
Bottom Line there is strength in numbers.
Please contact your MHAs and ministers, let them know enough is enough.STOP THE MOOSE CULL!!!

We live in area 44 and have noticed a drastic decline. my husband travels nightly between Whitbourne and Clarenville and hasn't seen one in the past 3 months. There seems to be an over abundance of licences issued for this area every year so we don't even apply here anymore.

Gary it is an indication of the population decrease. However that is part of the 5 year Moose Management Plan. This is the plan we need to stop.
