its just an electric motor mounted on a bench with rubber fingers on the end. yeah the rubber is a red color but i think its called natural rubber its really soft and almost sticky to the touch. As for size i dont think it matters but we did use a smaller motor on one that used to keep stalling out so make sure the motor is powerful enough. i use the picker for all ducks and it does a good job with the eiders too, just watch out because some eiders will tare easy so ya got to be more careful with them. just look at my pics from last winter to see ducks picked with the picker.

Nicholas, what are you using for your picker? Red mat? Size? How does it work on eiders?
