Russ, it sounds like you are having a pretty good year.  I had a bit of fun before I came back to work and am looking forward to getting home now to get in on a bit more action.  I was scouting out a few places before the season opened and managed to find a small pond with 10 or 12 geese in it up on Placentia road but didn't get a chance to get back there for a look.  The birds that you described do sound like male eiders (sea ducks) to me.  It is not common for them to land in ponds however, I have seen it in the past.
