A man who runs a wilderness lodge between Grand Falls-Windsor and Badger says he saw a large wild cat on the railbed near Badger last week.

Paul Rose, the owner of Riverfront Chalets and Newfoundland Rafting, said he saw the creature on August 14 from about 15 metres away as it calmly moved across the railbed.

"I looked ahead and a pretty big cat walks from the left to the right. I knew it was a cat as soon as I saw it, I just didn't recognize the colour. It was a real light tan brown," recalled Rose.

He estimated the animal was about six feet long from its nose to the end of its tail.

Rose said the first thing he did when he got home was look up what he saw on his computer.

"I didn't think we had these cats but apparently we do."

No photo taken

Rose reported his sighting to the provincial Department of Natural Resources on August 15.

A wildlife official confirmed Rose's report, but said in a statement, "There is no evidence to support the claim that that animal was a mountain lion. No photos were provided to the district forest office."

Rose said he stands by his identification of the animal. He said he spends most of his time working in the woods, and he's familiar with other wild animals such as lynx and coyotes.

He said he wants to get the word out about his sighting, and has urged others who may have seen similar animals to let wildlife officials know so its existence can be confirmed.

"I felt nothing less than privileged at seeing such a beautiful cat," said Rose.

Remember how all the genious's out there said the wolf was extinct,,well it's only a matter of time for one is captured or shot.If the polar bears and wolves can get here who says the mountain lion can't.

I love to read stories like this its always intesting to see what others are seeing I'm sure that another species of wildcat could live in newfoundland and god only knows how it got here just like the coyotes ! can't wait to see what we will read about next.
As for mr.paety in Canada we all have freedom of speech HOWEVER, if you read the guide lines or rules for the site there is NO cursing I'm 16 and I can clearly understand why that is. There is a better place for foolish comments

There has been other sightings of a big cat on the island, from CBS all the way to the west coast.  Why would wildlife offer sticky tags to catch fur to trappers in order to get DNA evidence of a cat on the island.  Severals people believe that there is a cat or cats on the island.  Also, nobody believed we had wolves on the island and look where we are now, we never had coyotes before the 80's, yet we have them now, so would it be so unrealistic to believe that a cat is on the island?  If I was Paul Rose, and I saw something cat-like in the woods, I would look for tracks, and look for fur on the trees to confirm the animal.

To Mac, as an administrator to the sight, I feel bad that you would restrict this sight to your kids.  I will bring it to the attention of other administrators.  I guess we have to realize that we have a young members and take that into consideration when making comments.  As a father, I have no problem letting my kids look at this sight.

In defence of Paul Rose; Don't even know the man.
Don't know how you can discredit someone you don't even know wheather or not they saw a mountain lion and topping that calling him "another crazy person in the woods" that is low in my opinion and pisses me off! He was probably banging along on his bike and in split second animal jumps out and gone accross road and into the woods. That doesn't take very many minutes. First reaction would be one of awe as haven't seen one like that before here, then "I have a camera" kicks in and you get it out , by that time animal gone; part of the process. Been there done that. I take hundreds of photos and videos and have missed lots of opportunities to get a photo or two when luck deals you an ace. We know that we live on an island and seems like some people mind are on that same island and can't get their head around the fact that mother nature has a way of "GETTIN' HER DONE" and if she wants cats on this rock we will get them.
Another thing, if my kids were young now going to school and doing a project on wildlife or something and had to refer to this site I would push the restricted button to deny them access as we have morals. I wouldn't want them influenced by what you said here and with the cursing. Bit much, even for old fellows like me who by the way also saw a mountain lion!!!!!
