The salmon angling season opens today for most of theprovince. For Newfoundland, all rivers are open starting today until September 7. In Labrador, the season runs from June 15 to September 15. But before you head out, there are responsible practices and various management measures for the fishing season. Outlined in the 2012-2013 Angler's Guide are several regulations that anglers must keep in mind this summer. Salmon caught in coastal areas of Newfoundland and Labrador cannot be retained. As well, if they're over 63 centimetres or under 30 centimetres those fish must also be released. Details on bag limits, river classification, and closed and special management areas are available on the Fisheries and Oceans website. There's also a new video online that instructs anglers how to properly catch and release salmon to help reduce injury to fish.
