A scary incident for a fishery and wildlife enforcement officer in Salmon Cove, Conception Bay. A group of officers were in the area of a popular trail looking for alleged salmon poachers this morning. Provincial enforcement officers were acting on a tip from Crime Stoppers about poaching around Salmon Cove Pond.
A spokesperson with the Department of Justice says officers were conducting surveillance on the suspect, who is believed to be a man, when one of them approached him in an attempt to make an arrest. Police say the suspect fled on an ATV with a child in the extra seat. The officer somehow became entangled in the machine and was dragged for a distance. The Mounties say his injuries are non-life threatening. They are looking for the red four-wheeler and the suspect, who was wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. A charge of assault is expected to be laid. Anyone with information is asked to call the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
