Its a 20 foot leash. The leash and collar are used for all tracking. Firstly Chase will know when he sees it that we are going to go tracking. Its his mental cue.If he is focused he will drag me along the blood trail.
It also controls the speed at which he works, slower is better. This is a training video,as time went by less Blood is used and distances/ times increased. So the leash will make him buckle down and focus.
Teaching a dog to track is a lot of fun.Unlike most other training we cant smell so you have to learn to read and trust your dog.
On test day the track was 20 hrs old, and it had poured hard for at least 16 of the 20 hours. It was over 500 meters long and 250 ml of blood was used. I had no idea where the trail was and despite a stop to point a grouse he took me to the end. You cant make a dog track, he has to want to do it to please you and as in the video to get to his treat or toy at end. It has to be a fun game. In training the progress has to be always for dog to find the end and it has to be fun.

Fred, Are you using the leash in this training scenario, to teach the dog the right distance he needs to stay in? Ed
