Information regarding Ticks in Newfoundland, best bet is to skin them in the woods.
We have a pamphlet on the web that describes the ticks of NL. It is at http://www.nr.gov.nl.ca/nr/agrifoods/animal/animal_health/ds_08_004...
What you are describing is very common in my experience and seems to occur most notably when rabbit populations are high. It is called the rabbit tick (Haemaphysalis leporispalustris) and can be seen sometimes in the 100s on individual animals, often on the ears.
Occasionally we see them on cats and lynx, no doubt because they are in areas frequented by rabbits.
I’m not aware of any human health risk so agree with your approach, skinning the rabbits removes the ticks.

Hi Brandon, I've looked on the internet for some information, I've also e-mailed wildlife to see what they have to say, I have not heard anything back from the wildlife dept. If any animal has enought ticks it can make them sick.
