I think another problem is some young people are doing their hunting test, that have never been hunting before. They get their lience and think they are good to go. They have no idea about the range of a firearm, or for hunting in general. This can cause alot of problems in the field, especially when it comes to the safety of themselves and other hunters. I'm not saying all young hunters, but there are too many going in hunting inexperienced. I don't know what the answer is, but a shooting test won't solve the problem. And of course there some hunters going in, that just don't give a shit if they cripple an animal or not. Just as long as they get a shot.

I have to agree with u on this albert...buddy of mine lost his beagle earlier the year and I went up lookin with him. While we were lookin we came across a animal that was shot and I guess they "thought" they never hit which in fact they did.Too bad they never walked in the alter cuz they would have found her.Its just sad to think fellas fire at animals and don't bother to go and have a look.Common sense can really make a difference.By the way we did find his dog and he was gone in over the hills with a rabbit...took a hour er so but we cut him off and caught him lol

To my knowledge there is no shooting test that either has , or will ever , improve what is between the ears of the person holding the rifle . Two many shots that are taken that  should not have been taken at all , weather the distance was to far or beyond the capability of  the shooter . Sometimes with a heavy rifle shooters think that the animal should drop in it's tracks, and if it does not well it's easier to say I missed than to walk 2-3 hundred yrds. across a bog and check it out. It's what's in the head that needs to be dealt with.

I agree, something should be done.

This is true peter, adrenalin and excitement can really take over its happened to everyone. If a fella told me it don't happen to him I would say"your full of it".But if you don't have any experience of shooting a rifle well....u aint got a prayer of hitting the animal.this debate can go on for days and days, but really something has to be done about inexperienced hunters in the woods. To many animals are be crippled and left to suffer in the woods.

Shooting at a plywood target and shooting at a 20 point bull feels a little different to say the least. Adding a target shoot to the Hunter Education course will not add to the capability of the hunter, in the field, in my opinion.

I have to agree with some points peter but at least the test will make u shoot a target and well if u don't get the bull on the target well by....come back later and try again cuz u FAIL.Atleast there won't be ppl not familiar with shooting in the woods.really how many ppl are in the woods that probably shot f@#k all bullets and don't have a sweet clue,I'd say a good many.Least if the shooting test came back well u got no choice to be familiar with shooting cuz if not....you don't get a liscense...but that's my opinion

I honestly don't see how shooting at a target is going to solve the problem. I think the biggest problems are  1, some hunters do not practise their shooting skills. I always fire off a box of bullets before the hunt to get comfortable with my rifle again for the up comming season.  2, hunters are taking too long of a shot with guns not capable of a clean kill at a long distance. Here is a prime example, 303 great gun, just about everyone has one. Not a great gun for distances past 200 yards. It just don't have the velocity and foot pounds to produce a clean humane kill at 300 or 400 yards.  3, bullet ballistics I know my 180 gr 300 win mag is dead on at 200 yards. 300 yards the bullet drop 11 inches at 400 yards the bullet 30 inches. Some people can't judge distance and they make a poor judgement,  Number 4, people are using those God Dammm 22-250s for moose hunting. Moose are running away full of lead. They are left to suffer and die a horrible death. Moose get up from being hit by a 180 gr bullet let alone a 50 to 65gr bullet from a pop gun!

Shooting test you say. I just don't see how shooting a target at 50 yards will fix that!!

That is true mike and i agree john. I have had people tell me shot a few moose and never got them. It's a good chance that they hit them but never looked. The shooting test should be back on the list to do. Just as well to put the hunting age down to 16 like they want. We don't have enough crippled moose around as it is, hey ba

I agree with that. There is too many ppl who don't have a clue how to shoot in the woods wingin shots at what ever and just crippling them and not killing.Gov. Don't have a clue by
