my buddy was hunting down in carbonear ! i dont know if you know were im talking about when i say in stump hills, but he had them in his yard m he also has spotted 3 or four so far this year, and last year down around there i seen many aswell as a load of tracks, and im starting to get gear now for coyote hunting starting next year i think, thanks for the tips !
The answer, I think is as many hunters with the dogs as possible. I go with a minimum of 3. Be loud let the coyotes know your there, blast a shot or 2 to make sure they hear you. With any luck they will take off and leave you alone, but you must be prepared for them. Chase the dog a little, try and keep all the hunters on the out side of the dog as it runs the rabbit or at least in ear shot. I know some times easier said than done. Another thing I do is hunt an area that has other rabbit hunters. The more hunters in an area (without crowding) the better those critters will be kept at bay and the safer the beagles.
Brandon, what area was your buddy hunting in?
Brandon a lot of hunters are loosing their beagles to the coyotes. I have heard this story many times. Many have not ended quite as good as this story. I believe everyone should hunt them and kill as many as possible. I will not take my beagle in the woods with less than 3 hunters. Am I paranoid? Ask your friend....
As for a caller, I have a foxpro Spitfire. Personally, I think all the electronic callers are alike and they make the same sounds. I heard a Primos power Dogg and it sounded as good as my Foxpro maybe even better. I use a Savage Axis 223 because it's cheap to buy and cheap to shoot.
Good Luck!!
I have a beagle and have always loved hunting rabbits with them, but I won't even take him in anymore because I know for sure that a coyote will do the job on him.
To them they are prey and the beagle is taking his food and I'm sure a beagle will attract a coyote to see whats on the go.
noone up around my area hunts coyotes as far as i know , and if so not in the harbour grace/carbonear area, and ive seen a few around and have herd them in around while in fishing , so im looking to start , any tips on a gun, caller etc?, also my buddy shot one last week with a shot gun it was chasin his beagle he claims!
They are smart and soon realize your not one of them and will not answer back after you get them to answer you a couple of times.
I had been in a few times to my little spot to get no answer because they have caught on its not one of them but one day I had stoped there a little farther up the road to sneak there but had realized someone else had stopped in the place they were hanging around. When I was about to leave the bike started up and left, when they had almost got out of hearing range the whole area came alive with the grouping and howling sounds. I guess they figured the coast was clear and no one was around, as soon as I hit the foxpro with the distress rabbit after they had stoped for a while I never heard or saw either one. They are smart and learn fast.
Peter i read in the paper just this past week about a fella hunting in the fox marsh area and came across a pack of a dozen or so, so it may be true. I havent had any luck so far this year but I've also had verbal replies twice which is deffiently promising and a little better than going home empty handed. Once was in foxtrap and the other time was near witless bay line.
My pleasure, hope to see a picture soon. All The Best
