All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

Anyone hear if there are any turrs in Placentia Bay yet?
Great picture peter
Hope everyone had an enjoyable turr season. Turrs provide valuable meat to many families and a great sport to boot.
Peter I grew up in Placentia bay, work in Placentia bay on the water I’m fully aware of everyplace to land in Placentia bay. The point was it’s impossible to enforce every place. With regard to the cost of getting 6 eider ducks it’s not a big difference for us anyway if you are at them using boats. Yes hunting with dogs from shore is cheaper but not a lot of people doing that and getting a limit of ducks these days.
I agree with you on the problem being 20 birds per day for 10 days. But there is a lot of difference in the cost associated with getting 6 ducks than it is for a day on the bay to get a few turres. For the past 10-12 years, I’ve only made one trip per year and most times got my 20 birds. Some years I didn’t get the quota. But no matter if it was one turre or 20 turres, the cost to me was always the same: $40-$50 in gas for the boat and $40-$50 in gas for the truck. I certainly don’t go at it for the cost per bird, but knowing that I’m probably only going to get in trip for the season, I’m not concern about getting 20 birds per year.
There are hundreds of places to land in Placentia Bay.
The 20 per day is not the big problem it’s the 20 per day for 10 days . Possession limit is almost impossible to enforce for instance in Placentia bay there 10 places to land, there are another 5 or 6 places in st Mary’s bay. They are not going to search everyone’s deep freeze either and it would not make sense because anyone selling them they are gone the day they get in. Tags is the only solution.
Also why does everyone need 20 turrs per day. Your limit on ducks is 6 per person no one has a problem going for that.
Personally, I agree with the 20 per trip bag limit because some of us only get one opportunity to hunt during the season and 20 birds is not a lot when you give family and friends a few and you cook 3-4 birds per meal. But I certainly agree with enforcement. Just having the presence of an officer in the area of the bay on any good day on the water might be enough to deter some from going overboard with it.
Well said Boyd, heavy fines might deter anyone from going overboard with it. Them heavy fines might put another wildlife officer in a job. The island is to big for what little enforcement we have.
