All hunters must purchase and be in possession of a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a Habitat Conservation Stamp while hunting murres. This hunt is only open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Murres are the only migratory bird that can be legally hunted from a power boat. Any occupant of a boat who shoots or retrieves murres, or anyone who operates a boat to pursue murres, is hunting as defined in the Migratory Birds Regulations and is required to hold a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, non-toxic shot must be used to hunt migratory birds, except for murres (turrs). For those birds still hunted with lead shot, remove the lead shot before cooking whenever possible in order to reduce your exposure to contaminants.

in the rules and reg it says you are allowed 20 per day and 40 in your possesion per person,if you have three guys in a boat does that mean your allowed 60 turrs for that day,or is it 40.

My question are as follows;
Who is stating that the hunting pressure in Placentia Bay is too great? Is it scientific? Is it locals? What is the basis for the argument?
Just because you see 100 Boats (for example) in placentia Bay, and ten in Conception bay, doesn't mean the Turr population has 10x's more pressure in placentia bay! Turrs, are migratory meaning they move from place to place. Often times being forced to go to different place due to weather patterns. so the Turrs, hunted in Conception Bay today, maybe the turrs your hunting in Placentia Bay two-three days from now. I have not seen any Scientific reports explaining a need to reduce the number of turrs being harvested. In Fact, There are less people hunting turrs today than in our past when bag limits were more generous. In fact, The Twiligate area has asked for an increase in the harvestable limit for their area. Weather is the main reason "turr numbers" are "down". many of the birds haven't made the migration down to Newfoundland yet, Why? trends in weather! Our winters are not given the conditions the migrating birds need to move them here. Thus, the numbers of turrs seen around the province may appear low. But the overall number of turrs is stable.
Furthermore, our turrs come down from Greenland, So are we not allowed to harvest these turrs, because we are not from Greenland?
So, why are we suggesting that turr population are in jeopardy due to over harvesting in Placentia Bay? Is it Greed? Or, is there evidence that i am missing?
B'Ys, everyone with a licence has a right to hunt where they like. Why is it ok for Tony to hunt Placentia Bay and no one else? Do you have a God given right? I'm not trying to be smart, just trying to figure out why its ok for you and not me or anyone else to hunt there. No one owns the turrs they migrate here like the geese leave here and migrate and then return back in the spring. I'm pretty sure if thr Goulds were blocked with geese you would go and try to harvest some. I don't see anything wrong with that. Here lies the problem, going out day after day after day and shooting your limit. Thats breaking the law, your possesion limit is twice the daily limit. I'm pretty sure if everyone followed that there would not be a problem.
Every Newfoundlander has a right to get a feed of turrs, no matter where they shoot them.
By the way, I was born in Placentia Bay.
funny!!!
Less hunting = more birds!!! What a shock eh?? lol
That's is why there are alot of birds around the weather has everyone at home and not shooting turr's. The one day we did get everyone and there mother was on the water.LOL
Ya heard there were a few turrs futher out the bay, but nothing down this way. It's a long steam from here to Placentia, especially with the weather we are gettin lately.
Sorry mike that i took it the wrong way. I try to share as much as i can on this site to all who need it. You are right in saying that this is a great site for sharing info.
