Save Our Moose Action Committee

For the past number of years there has been an active campaign to drastically reduce the number of moose in the province of Newfoundland & Labrador. This campaign would have moose management shift away from a scientific, logic based management strategy to an emotional, fear response management strategy. The number of moose-vehicle collisions has been used to grossly misrepresent moose populations throughout the province. These numbers are being presented and decisions are being made that could adversely affect the future viability of a long held cultural tradition of going out and hunting moose for food and sport. Non-resident hunting in the province provides between $30-40 million dollars annually for provincial coffers. If one includes both direct and indirect economic benefits of hunting, from residents, then the number (conservatively) could be double that mentioned above! Thus, with a dramatic reduction in moose population there would also be a reduction in the economic spin offs from the harvesting of these animals and a large loss of employment for those involved in this type of work.

The majority of moose-vehicle collisions are preventable. People are driving at high rates of speed in poor weather, poor visibility and distracted drivers are a major issue for everyone's safety.

SOMAC, would like to see our moose hunt based on scientific data. We would like to see a sustainable moose for future generations to come.

This is a ground level movement to protect our moose from destruction.

I don't have a problem reducing the number of moose licenses wherever declines in the population require it, but I am against reducing the length of the season. It's fine for those who have jobs with…Continue

Interesting thoughts,

If the caribou herds of Labrador were completely wiped out, would this make it easier for mining companies to access the land?

Could the caribou be stopping the mining companies from mining? Are the mining companies promising a big boost to economy if they had access to the land?

After the land has been clear cut and stripped, why do they plant spruce trees? No animals can eat it. Moose need Balsam Fir, Dog wood and birch to survive the winter?

Why has the jaw bone study been cut, when so much information can be obtained at a very minimal cost?

Was the Wildlife division really done away with to save money or purposely done away with so government can control what people hear?

Will government contract out moose studies?
And if so, what are the chances of an unbiased report?

Couple of questions to ponder?

Human Footprint & Wildlife

The consequence of development on multiple levels on all wildlife is bad enough but when governments wash their hands of all things which protect wildlife and the vital habitat which is essential to their survival, the consequence is devastating. That is exactly what this liberal government has done with respect to wildlife protection through gutting biology and enforcement.

Waterfall populations in our province have been decimated  largely by the irresponsible behavior of cabin owners who have .22 cal. rifles in their cottages & will shoot at anything for target practice.  Moose populations are on the verge of total collapse because of successful lobbying to eradicate moose. Now the George River Herd has gone beyond the critical point and are heading for what appears to be  inevitable extinction.

Enforcement is virtually non-existent. Scientific research has been all but removed. There hasn’t been a census taken on moose populations in over a decade.  Data on successful harvesting of moose I suggest is far from accurate. Development of crown lands is open to any developer who can show that they can make a profit. Urban sprawl is reaching outward to develop pristine places which need protection.

Politicians simply don’t care about protection of wildlife and have a policy of development at any cost. It seems that the isolated islands of habitat that is left will in our lifetime be a distant memory for our children. The sad part of this is that people in general simply don’t care as long as their little world is protected. The truth however is that our wildlife is the only  thing that really matters in our little world because we only have one home and we are making a mess of it.

Here is a message I sent to Minister Crocker about the caribou.

Minister there is a terrible atrocity taking place in Labrador. Quebec natives are crossing the border and slaughtering the few caribou that are left. We need you the government to protect these animals. The caribou are declining at an alarming rate. If this continues under the liberal government, your government will be responsible for the demise of the Labrador Caribou.
All we ask is that you act on the laws that are already in place. This herd needs to be protected. That responsibility falls directly to you. Do not let this continue. Give whatever resources that our Wildlfe Enforcement Officers need to bring this to a halt.
Arrest the poachers, charge them and treat them as you would treat any poacher, whoever they are.
We ask that this be done immediately, for action is needed not words.
Please do not bend to these Quebec native poachers. These poachers need to be stopped now rather than later.

Moose Under Assault

Since the first 6 moose were introduced and released from Howley in 1904 as a food source for the people of this province, well over 3,000,000 moose have been harvested for food. This makes moose an incredibly valuable resource and an important part of our natural heritage. The money that is generated by hunters investing in securing an animal both for resident and nonresident hunters is a huge revenue generator.

Instead of embracing and protecting this magnificent species, we are attacking this species because moose are regarded as a pest by opponents. SOPAC, who have now infiltrated govt. with elected politicians and who are gaining ground are getting unlimited free publicity through the media while the silent majority of people in this province, particularly in rural Newfoundland, are silent. The moose population is now a third of what it was a decade ago thanks in large part to the effective efforts of SOPAC.

This type of attack on moose is not unique to this island as everywhere globally wildlife is being subjected to increased pressure as a result of the human footprint.

.

No doubt the Government has a responsibility to protect drivers from moose vehicle collisions, but killing or culling moose is not the solution. We need to protect ourselves not from moose but from our driving habits. Education is the key to a solution. Let us embrace our wildlife instead of attacking this noble animal.

Most of us are aware of the story on Vocm today of the caribou slaughter happening in Labrador .
Quebec natives are crossing the border and slaughtering the few caribou that are left.
One of the main reasons this is happening is because of the liberal cuts to our wildlife division. As of now, we do not have an enforcement presence to deal with the situation happening in Labrador. Tomorrow morning the Quebec natives will back in Labrador slaughtering more of the caribou herd. The Labrador Caribou herd cannot withstand this pressure.
It has to stop, if left unattended this free for all by the Quebec natives will completely destroy the caribou herd.

The Wildlife Enforcement Officers have had their job description changed. Now with all the extra duties our enforcement officers have to engage in, it leaves little to no time to do what they were mandated to do. Their job was to protect our wildlife resources. We need our wildlife enforcement officers to do the job they were hired to do, protect OUR wildlife from being pillaged.

I was contacted by a resident of Labrador and I was asked to bring this atrocity to the public eye. I was asked to let people know that there is no wildlife enforcement to protect the caribou of Labrador.
We need to speak up about this. This cannot be permitted to continue. It MUST BE STOPPED!

I'm asking everyone to please copy and paste this message. Please send it to each and every MHA in the house.

We demand that our wildlife resources be protected. We the people, demand that you, the government elected by the people, stand up and protect our resources from anyone that is destroying it.

I have been advocating for saving our moose for years. It is no secret that the govt. have active members of SOPAC lobbying hard and effectively within the hallowed halls of govt. I know that the new sustainable population for moose is set at 30,000 which is ludicrous. I am very concerned about the silence on the part of wildlife biologists who can make a difference. They are being muzzled by bureaucrats. Unless concerned advocates for a healthy moose population speak out I fear that SOPAC will achieve their objective and totally eradicate this precious part of our natural heritage. People are far to complacent with accepting the status quo. I congratulate any and all efforts to stand up and be counted.
