Saskatchewan trappers are cashing in on a hot new fur trend.

This year, the price of a coyote pelt is going for almost double what they were three years ago. The best pelts used to fetch $50. Now, trappers can get about $100.

It is difficult to tally coyote numbers beyond voluntary trapper surveys.

Here are the number of coyote or "prairie wolf" pelts in Saskatchewan from 2006-10:

Year Number of coyote or "prairie wolf" pelts in Saskatchewan Value
2006        28,803 $1,622,473
2007 26,849 $893,535
2008 17,723 $445,556
2009 14,207 $395,949
2010 14,813 $840,416

I have been out a couple times last week during the last hour of daylight after the wind calmed down, now that trapping season has opened up its perfect..... I have a trappers license and its great to add fox and lynx( during open season) to the predator hunting list along with coyotes. I called out a couple of fox and had some wileys howling up a storm right after I pulled the trigger on a big silver fox a few evenings ago, at least I know where they are hanging out!

Hope the bogs and ponds freeze up early this year just because it adds to extra open areas to call coyotes, its way too wooded where I hunt and the coyotes and fox naturally use it to their advantage. Trevor is right, another couple of cold weeks and that will prime up the pelts.

Coyotes should be easier to call out this year just because of the very low rabbit population....In turn the coyotes are hungry and looking for a easy meal.....but then again they are always hungry !!!! LOL.

I'm sure we will also get a little higher price, but pelts here are probably not prime yet.  You won't get the best pelts for a bit yet.

Thats good news Tony.....even though western coyotes fetch a higher price due to pale/light coloured pelts than the darker coyotes we have here on the Island, but the flip side is we get $25.00 for a coyote carcass if turned in to the wildlife department.

If the prices dropped to $5.00 a coyote I would still hunt them just for the thrill and challenge of the hunt, I may start hunting them before freeze up this year if coyote pelts are up in price.
