Salmonier Nature Park Closed for Second Day

The Salmonier Nature Park is still closed as park officials and wildlife officers try to capture an escaped animal. A lynx got away from an enclosure at the park yesterday, prompting an all-day search. That search is continuing today, and park officials will keep the park closed until further notice.

Signal Hill Temporarily Closed for Fox Removal

Parks Canada staff are in the process of relocating some of Signal Hill's most brazen visitors. Crews closed the top parking lot of the hill this morning to remove foxes from the site, and bring them to less-populated areas on the Avalon Peninsula.

Glenn Keough, Manager of National Historic Sites and Visitor Experience at Parks Canada, says the site has seen a number of foxes in recent months, and experienced problems with visitors interacting with and…

White Coyotes?

National Geographic is highlighting what appears to be a unique Newfoundland phenomenon - white coyotes. The author of the article 'Snow Coyotes and Spirit Bears,' Carl Zimmer, says the Department of Environment and Conservation collects coyote carcasses as part of their research into the animals, and out of the 6-thousand specimens collected, six are snow white. Zimmer says the animals aren't albinos, or animals who lack pigment; instead, these coyotes carry the gene for white fur, helping…

Manhunt ongoing for suspect in wildlife officer assault

A search is underway for a man who allegedly assaulted a provincial fish and wildlife enforcement officer at Salmon Cove Pond on Wednesday morning, while he was investigating a poaching complaint.

The suspect was on an ATV when the officer approached him around 8:30 a.m. That’s when the alleged assault took place.

The officer was dragged behind the ATV for a distance. It’s not yet clear how far.

The wildlife officer was taken to hospital and treated,…

Coyote pelts in high demand

Saskatchewan trappers are cashing in on a hot new fur trend.

This year, the price of a coyote pelt is going for almost double what they were three years ago. The best pelts used to fetch $50. Now, trappers can get about $100.

It is difficult to tally coyote numbers beyond voluntary trapper surveys.

Here are the number of coyote or "prairie wolf" pelts in Saskatchewan from 2006-10:…

Coyote Sighting in Victoria

A woman on the "neck" in Victoria thought she had a backyard visit from a dog this morning, but it turned out to be a coyote. The resident says she was on her back deck, when she saw what she thought was a German shepherd on her lawn. On closer examination it turned out to be a grey coyote. The woman says the coyote stared her down for a few minutes, and then headed through the wooded area towards the Pentecostal church.

She believes the animal may have been attracted to the smell of…

Corner Brook cat dies after possible coyote attack

A Corner Brook man is devastated about his cat's death following a brutal attack in his backyard by what may have been a coyote.

Edgar Burton from the Curling area said the attack happened Sunday morning around 8 a.m., when he let his cat Dusty outside.

Five minutes later, Burton heard a thumping sound, but couldn't see anything in his yard.

Another five minutes passed, and Burton said he heard a yapping sound, "like a dog barking."

"So I went to my back window…

No evidence of breeding

The Newfoundland wolf is believed to have been hunted to extinction on the island since about 1930, but the grey wolf is still found in Labrador.

"Although wolves may occasionally arrive from Labrador, there is no evidence of a breeding population on the island portion of the province," said Friday's news release.

The release said the province has collected tissue samples from about 3,000 coyotes shot or trapped in Newfoundland through the coyote carcass collection program but…

Moose Crash Victim Credits Careful Driving

One of the persons involved in a weekend moose accident credits driving according to the conditions as one of the reasons why nobody in the car was injured.

The car came upon two moose in the middle of the road on the Long Harbour Hill at about 10:30 Saturday night. Wayne says he didnt have any time to avoid the moose, so he concentrated on keeping the vehicle on the road.

Four people, including two young children, were in the car. He told VOCM Open Line with Randy Simms this…

Water Safety Dos and Don’ts

Stay in touch. When in or near the water, younger children should be under “touch supervision”—or within an arm’s length of a grown-up—at all times.

Get lessons. Formal swimming instruction may lower the risk of drowning for children ages 1 to 4. (But remember: It will not make them “drown proof.”)

Hold the beer. Adults should refrain from drinking alcohol when supervising little ones in or near the water. Likewise, adolescents should be warned of the dangers of swimming or…

Possible to live with coyotes in St. John's, says MUN prof

A Memorial University of Newfoundland professor says St. John's should look at how other Canadian cities are dealing with coyotes now that the animals are being spotted in and around the provincial capital

A coyote was killed Tuesday near Torbay Road in St. John’s, after sightings of the animal were reported in many parts of the city. Police and wildlife officers stopped the animal — which, officials later told CBC, was a 29-pound male.

Coyote in St. John's on May 1. (Bob…
