I was talking to Justin at Blue Ridge in Lewisport last week, he tells me wildlife wants the wolf.

Joe, I can see where you are coming from on the Wildlife issue. I don't feel that they did a poor job in dealing with the public but I can see how you could feel slighted by them in from your interactions with them or I could say there inactions ;)

As far as the good predator/bad predator thing goes... well. I think a predator is a predator. I can understand  sheep farmer not liking coyotes but are we to believe that wolves wouldn't do the same thing? Dogs? I'd say a fox could take out a lamb and would if it had the chance. Forget about live stock for a moment. So, we have fox, coyote and now wolves eating game on the island. It seems we are fine with foxes eating game, we feel coyotes are a serious threat to game populations and humanity as a whole (possibly because they migrated here) and from what I have heard in the media and through conversations with friends we will be fine with wolves (also migrant) because we see them as some how more noble and majestic then the others. This makes no sense to me.

So I guess I disagree with you Ken and Joe but I'm glad you responded. I thought after I had posted that I may have come across as an a@@hole.

I don't know if it's true, but time will tell. I guess we will have to wait and see.

@Peter: I would have to agree with Billy, that is a rather ridiculous stat. Maybe 50 wolves on the entire island is a lot more reasonable and possibly correct.

it's said that at peak populations before they were started to be hunted by the europeans, they may have reached around 650 - 800 on the island....but more likely never rose above 450 animals at any one time....If there were 1000 animals today....there would certainly be many more sightings...

1000?? Can't see that....in the hay day of the newfoundland wolf...there were hardly any...they cover such a huge range, that only so many packs would take care of the whole island...

I have heard threw the grape vine, there are well over 1000 wolves present on the island.

In my opinion and good predator would be a fox, only eating small game. But a bad predator is something that is killing off livestock and putting alot of hurt on farmers and there way of life.

So i would like to hear what you think is good and bad tom, in your opinion.

the lack of communicating with the public in this situation and keeping them up to date.sending it outside of the province for testing isn't saying much for our local university and I still didn't get a call from them to let me know the results.they had no trouble calling to get info on the whole thing.maybe I didn't deserve a call but I think I did and anything that kills livestock such as goats and sheep in your back yard and will attack anything it can make a meal out of is in my opinion a bad predator.a good predator is one that will have to be described by someone else.17 sheep killed here in bonavista pasture last couple years.

Can some one explain to me what it was that Wildlife did poorly in this situation? I have heard this said many times but I can not see where people are coming from with that statement. Also wondering how people go about deciding which predators are good and which ones are bad? I'm serious about that last one too.
