Police are investigating after two hunters shot and killed a dog near Middle Pond on the Southern Shore Highway on Saturday. Jim Owens says he and his 2-year old black Lab, Quacker went for a run in the woods near his home when she got about 30 feet ahead of his ATV on the narrow path. Owens says he lost sight of the dog in a dip and that's when he heard the shot. He told VOCM Nightline with Pete Soucy he approached two menwho were on either side of the path, who claimed they'd shot at a coyote.

He says he called for his dog and she didn't come. After some searching he found her lying in the alders.

Jim says it's only coincidence that he didn't have his young son with him at the time. He says he's an avid hunter himself and he knows never to hunt coyote on such a narrow path. He says the men had to know they were shooting at a black Lab and not a wild animal.

He says they had 2250s with scopes on them, and had to look through the scope to see what they were shooting at.

Owens says it all happened about a half a kilometre from nearby homes.

Meanwhile, on VOCM Backtalk with Paddy Daly a woman who says she knows the hunters says it was all a terrible mistake.

It's not harsh, after reading some post's on the vocm webpage, by the sound of it they never had a chance to look into a scope to shoot. A running dog, anything running is hard to hit.

listening to his story, I don't think the scope would even have been an issue...if they too were on the path or right next to it where the dog was shot...they must have been VERY close when they shot it...I like to call those people..TRIGGER HAPPY IDIOTS...and no...this should not be called a terrible mistake!!!! Should definately be charged with reckless use of a firearm. Sorry, if this sounds harsh..but in my opinion...its true...

That's not good for the guy's who shot that dog. Looking in a scope and not knowing what you are shooting at is not good. It would be the same as if there had been someone jogging with the dog, would they have shot then?? They would still have to put the gun up to shoot. I don't think that it was a mistake, just poor hunting.

This is the kind of mistake that should ever happen, If you cant tell the diffrence between a black lab and a coyote stay out of the woods !!!
