It seems hunters are saying the numbers of ducks are down this year from other years. Hunters from all areas of the island portion of the province are having the same experience. " Numbers are down". Down from where you ask? Down from the wild, not the heavy populated metro areas. St. John's, Mount Pearl, Paradice and CBS are full of waterfowl. Almost every pothole that has water in it, has ducks. Not 2 or 3 but by the hundreds. Bowring Park, Quida Vida Lake, Waterford River and the list goes on and on. Those 3 places alone have literally thousands of ducks.

Everyone loves looking at the ducks, the bright colors and they are oh so cute. People come from all over to feed the ducks. They can go to the local corner store and buy the proper feed for the ducks. The ducks love the free feed and the more the ducks are fed, more and more ducks keep showing up. The ponds are so over populated that the ducks spill out onto the ground around the pond.

So here lies the problem, the massive numbers of ducks being steadly fed all day long every day, day after day. These birds are producing a heavy amount of feces. The ponds are not able to withstand and break down the large amounts of feces being dropped by the ducks. This feces is blocked with deadly bacteria like ecoli. Even the grounds around the ponds are full of feces.

Parents are bringing their children to these places completely unaware of the dangers of the dirt, filth and disease that can be caused by the duck feces. How many small children walk and run by the ducks and drop their favorite toy or pacifier on the ground in these areas only to pick them up and put them into their mouth again? Scary thought? How cute, little Billy drops a candy on the duck feces covered ground and picks up his candy off the ground and puts it in his mouth when mom has her back turned for split second.  What are the chances little Billy gets quite ill from ingesting the bacteria?

I guarantee if dogs were causing this much feces in our parks and watershed areas, the dogs would be banned from these areas.

WHY IS IT OK TO HAVE OUR CHILDREN WALK AND CRAWL OVER DUCK FECES AND NOT OK TO WALK AND CRAWL THROUGH DOG, CAT OR OTHER ANIMAL FECES?

It was anounced in CBS, Lawarence Pond is unfit for swiming because of the high bacteria (ecoli) count caused by duck feces in the water. The CBS town council are asking residents to please refrain from feeding the ducks. They hope to lower contaminants to make the pond safe for resident activites again.

Where in this blog does it say, kill off all the ducks. This blog is about the birds producing a heavy amount of feces. The ponds are not able to withstand and break down the large amounts of feces being dropped by the ducks. This feces is blocked with deadly bacteria like ecoli. Even the grounds around the ponds are full of feces.

Perhaps you should read and understand the comment before going off half cocked. There have always beens waterfowl in and around the metro area. Just not the massive numbers that are their now. Go to the park and have a look around. You cannot get handy to the park (duck pond areas) without walking in massive amounts of feces. However you wouldn't know that unless you were there.

Bird feces cause severe breathing problems for both children and adults, not to mention all the good things ecoli can do.

I'm sure the members of the site will be interested in knowing you are " im honestly sad to say im a newfoundlander i been living in alberta for 10 years.

Well I have lived all my life in Newfoundland and happy and proud to say it.

Next time read the article, pay attention to the content, not your imagination.

Peter i have to agree with the all of what you say. This has become one of the biggest dirt holes in st.john's. We don't even go there anymore. I don't thing that people see what they are doing when going to any park. The crap that is around is unreal. They should put a ban on all parks for feeding the ducks to drive them out into the wild again. That is where they belong.
