First it was coyotes, then the possibility of wolves arriving on the island, now the Department of Natural Resources confirms that it has received a report of a possible cougar sighting on the south coast. A department spokesperson tells VOCM News that while Conservation Officers were not able to confirm the sighting, they did receive a report of a cougar from a resident of Conne River on Monday. The sighting is under investigation, and no other calls have been received.
A few years ago there were a flurry of sightings of panther-like creatures on the island, particularly on the Northern Peninsula. While none of the sightings were confirmed to be a panther, at least one was positively identified as a large house cat.
