Parks Canada staff are in the process of relocating some of Signal Hill's most brazen visitors. Crews closed the top parking lot of the hill this morning to remove foxes from the site, and bring them to less-populated areas on the Avalon Peninsula.
Glenn Keough, Manager of National Historic Sites and Visitor Experience at Parks Canada, says the site has seen a number of foxes in recent months, and experienced problems with visitors interacting with and feeding the wild animals. He says the animals have become acclimated to humans, and their lack of fear is a concern for both the foxes and visitors.

Parks Staff Trying to Capture Injured Mother Fox and Pups
Signal Hill will be closed tonight from midnight to 8 a.m. as Parks Canada staff attempts to capture more foxes, in particular an injured mother fox with a broken paw, that is thought to be blind in one eye, and her four pups. A spokesperson says they will not relocate the mother fox without her young.
During the temporary closure vehicles will not be permitted to access the top parking lot. A further update will be provided if Parks Canada needs to extend the closure. Parks Canada captured and relocated three foxes this spring, because of concerns over people feeding the wild animals.
