Joe, I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that there has to be intent in order to be charged with a crime.  It's not like you intentionally went out to shoot a wolf, and there was no reasonable expectation that there would be any wolves in NL.

Also, I think that wildlife must be embarassed and they are using you as a scape goat to hide their own inadequacies.  Obviously they didn't know it was a wolf.  Why else would they pose with it?

I got a feeling joe someone is going to get it.

I should also say that I think it is a shame if the pelt is taken and not mounted for everybody to see.It is a shame for it to be thrown away.

I don't know for sure if I will be charged but according to the enforcement officer they pass all the evidence on to the prosecution side of wildlife and they decide if it will go to court.they also said that they were seizing the pelt for evidence.so I'm waiting for a charge.hopefully the prosecuter is a hunter and realize what the situation is.even the enforcement officer said if he called it in he would have shot it by mistake.I called in 7 coyotes since then and had my wife and son with me on 5 of them and shot only one.I think i'm over cautious now and trying to get them closer before I shoot.thanks for the support and I will keep you informed .

Joe, if it goes to court, it will be a major embarrassment for wildlife enforcement. It seems they did not know what it was and I think a judge will take that into consideration. The DNR had to use a DNA sample to find out what is was for certain.

I have a question for the DNR. Is this how you treat cooperating hunters?

I think the DNR knew that wolves have existed here for some time but refused to inform the public.

Joe i would not stand down and let them charge me with killing a wolf. As far as everyone new, there was none here.

Tom, to be honest with you I don't like anything that will kill a partridge,I live to partridge hunt and have been doing so since I had my first setter at 13 years old, whether it be a hawk, fox, mink, weasel, wolf or coyote.I love to hunt partridge..,oh wait that makes me a predator too.I'm not sure where that leaves me but anyway the enforcement side of wildlife were here at my house and took statements and licence numbers and they are taking the wolf pelt for evidence so I guess I'm just waiting for them to charge me with the crime now of shooting a wolf on a coyote licence or thats what they said.Dosen't bother me to much,it is what it is but what a lesson I've learned. I value other peoples opinions and always take advice from who ever will give it.take care

Thanks for pointing out the breeding differences Ken I hadn't thought about that.

No Tom you are not one at all. You make some good points there. I think that because the coyote breeds like rats is what the big hype is and you can't get ride of them. The fox is alot smaller than the coyote and i don't think that they are big enough to bring down a big game animal, so they would only be eating small game and there is plenty here. Now we have the wolf and it only breeds once a year only having up to 4-5 pups, as a coyote breeds as much as it likes so it seems.
