apparently if you bring a 30-06 in the woods out side of big game season your are going to shoot a moose if you see it, thats the excuse for that. Same with cross bows... obviously if you want a cross bow you are going poaching with it. Newfoundland is years behind on hunting regulations, they always play the poaching card.

The reason I've heard that crossbows are illegal is because once you load them they have to be fired, either with a unloading bolt or an hunting/practice bolt. Don't know if this is true or not????

Never shot one before but i assume it would be similar to a bow and you can just put the cocking string back on and let if off.

you are so right on the point of too many regulations. But the truly frustrating thing is that for the most part those regulations were put in place to appease the wishes of the a few.

Unfortunately there no single voice in Nfld that represents a large group of hunters.Hence the Government responds to a few voice who just voice opinions. There is nothing wrong with people voicing opinions. But its not a good reflectionon hunters in general when there arent any groups ( or maybe more accurately) not enough groups. That have formulated a position on some of this stuff.

Its been discussed before but todate its not done ( at least to my knowledge) having a Federation of Hunters or some unified group representing numbers.

And its shame on us for having not done so years ago.

We deserve what we have.

There are alternatives to a gun, don't get me wrong I'd love to carry one while working in the woods, buts it's not a reality here. Bear bangers and pepper spray do work fine and not only for bears. I carry bangers with me, even have some in the cabin case a bear comes handy.

Kevin, that"s what i love about living in a small outport as i do,i can target shoot, dog training with a gun ,and nobody gives a sh,,t,, as i know everybody in the place,  and my  house has the back  to the sticks \water.too many stupid rules in nl for sure.,,,,is it legal- NO- but ill cross that bridge when i come to it .. as long as im safe with it ill do it .

the down side Lorne is that , it takes one person to pick up the phone and you are guilty of a bunch of things. Ive never had issues with Wildlife or RCMP but if one person decides to pick up phone they have to react.

Guns today are a bad word. We live in a society where guns are viewed by the masses as having no place in society for any reason. And its going to get worst before it gets better.

I agree totally.. Hunters are almost frowned upon as smokers are these days!!

Fred ,, Jeff all very, very  true words,,,as a hunter you feel like your in a c -clamp and every year it keep"s getting tighter.

And you know being in all these rural places makes you think everything is just great. Its just you your gun and the dog and the woods. You know your neighbor, "hes the best kind"

Its a false sense of security.(Bill  C-68 changed all that)

Often we dont realize that things that are happening 1000s of miles away are affecting us and we dont even know it. Nor will we until one day it lands in our laps.

As the world becomes even more super civilized, we become even more disconnected. There was a time people knew where the food comes from. We now have a full generation of people who come to know chicken as growing on styrofoam at the nearest Fresh Mart.

How many of us have kids that actually still eat the game we harvest.? How ever many it is, its becoming fewer and fewer. How many of us are still eating it.

So as society hears more and more about gun violence and as hunters we become extinct

the fight to maintain our way of life, with regards to firearms gets harder.

For those who talk about defending yourselves, this is Canada, and while you have the rite to do so. I suggest you research to what extent you can. You may be surprised.

Forget defending yourself against a growling coyote while trouting. Go and actually check and see to what extent you are permitted to defend yourself in an all out home invasion. Google

But its good to know that when life or death can be seconds away, in a City in Canada, the Police can be there in an minutes in a rural town in may be an hour.!!

There I got that off my chest, now I can back to cleaning up my shed.

Very true fred, It's going to get worse befor it's get's better.

I agree with you guys completely. Hunting is looked down upon and it is only going to get worse. I think we need to do more to educate and connect with the general public. My non-hunting non-fishing friends think both activities are barbaric and sadistic and that generally hunters/fishers are ignorant hicks. And unfortunately I can sometimes understand where they are coming from. I think too often we demonstrate a lack of respect for wildlife and take for granted the privileges(not rights) of hunting and fishing and that makes us all look bad to the public. The reality is that we are going to have to meet the public and the government half way on all issues or we will have to watch these privileges disappear. I think more and more we are going to be faced with the ethics of hunting and fishing. "How can you justify inflicting pain and suffering on animals for amusement?" is a question I have been asked a dozen times at least and I still don't know how to answer it.

As for the original topic of this thread I completely disagree. If you want to carry a hand gun around that's fine. If you believe you should have the right to carry a handgun, that's fine too, state that fact. But I don't think it is fair to cast coyotes or bears as the bogey man in order to rationalize and reaffirm a stated belief.
