SPCA Warns Of Trap Dangers In Corner Brook Area
The Bay of Islands SPCA is concerned about the location of snares being set by trappers in and around the Corner Brook area. Leanne O’Reilly, the director of public affairs for the Bay of Islands SPCA, is speaking out about the dozens of complaint calls the organization has received so far this season regarding the placement of snares.
The problem, she says, is that some are too close to residential areas and pets like dogs are at risk of becoming entangled. O’Reilly explains that traps must be clearly marked and set over 100ft from a trail or roadway. It is illegal to tamper with existing traps, even those illegally placed. The best protection, says the SPCA, is for dog owners is to use a leash and carry wire cutters when out with your pets this winter in the Corner Brook area.

I have one question, what are the pets doing running around of there leash.
Could be hunting dogs or people taking their animals in the woods for a walk to let them run. Lots of people do that in the Goulds or take them to Paddy's pond for a swim.
I though that all pets are to be on leashes. One whould guess that being on a walking trail that is made for the public you would have to leash you pet. I can see how people would let there dogs run in the goulds because they are mostly on farm lands. When they take there dogs to paddy's pond for a swim, it 90% of the time it's summer. But i don't agree with people setting them close to others homes. I have a neighbor who had a garden with alot of vegetables growning and because someone never took care of there cat and let it rome when they let it out, she lost it all to the cat crapping in the garden. The spca was call and did nothing, wildlife was call and did nothing, city was called and they did less. I guess what i am trying to say is if you own it take care of it. P.S she lost about $2000.00 in food that summer, and the cat is still out doors romeing around.
That would make me sick to, the owner of the cat should be held responsible.
But you can see how people take their dogs (beagles, setters and so on) in the woods for a run. I think a lot of times, common sense goes a long way. Funny thing, common sense is not so common any more.
Yes i can see people letting there pets run in the woods. But as for that cat owner, she was asked to take pic's of the cat in her yard and something will be done. She took the pic's and still that same cat romes free.
"O’Reilly explains that traps must be clearly marked and set over 100ft from a trail or roadway." NOT TRUE...and likley said so that they would get calls and complaints. Dogs being put on a leash is required unless hunting with them.
