Looking at picking up a sxp 3" pump but it has a 26" barrel. All I ever used was a 28" barrel on a old Winchester 1200 pump .Mostly going to be used for waterfowl/partridge. I"m thinking that there won"t be much difference with the ammo and chokes nowadays. Any suggestions??

Two inches of barrel length won't make much difference in terms of ballistic performance. I know guys who use 26" barrels with no issues. And the SXP (from the reviews I've read) seems to be an excellent gun. I'd say go for it.

Winchester makes an excellent pump shotgun and the SXP is certainly one of those. With reguards to the barrel, don't know what difference it would make, but shooting 3" shells my preference would be the 28" over the 26" for waterfowl.

Michael with average lead shot shells ,you will lose between 14 -15 feet per second with that two inches gone,so you won"t notice it, i hunted turrs, ducks and everthing with a 22 inch 1400 win  semi and i didn't see any differance. as for the sxp it would be a real nice  with that 26 on it.

Performance wise there will be little or any difference in a 26 or 28 inch barrels. One time there was but with the new powders, chokes and wads. There is no difference. Mostly it will come down to personal preference.

Ok fellas thanks for the reply's it was helpful. I was shy on the 26" barrel at first but judging on what I hear and the comments here I don't think I'm going to have an issue. Hopefully going to pick one up the week, thanks again.

Check out Blue Ridge on the west coast, Cabelas & Wholesale Sports all have good prices on the sxp.

Pick up a 3.5 inch, it will give you more gange and power while shooting waterfowl, especially geese, but but you can still shoot ligher 2.75 shells.

shane, if you do any reading of all the testing done with the 31\2 shell you would see that the patterns arn"t that good.that long shell came into play when steel shot became manditory  ,,sp-     for waterfoul. it:s not much good to have extra shot if you have a blown pattern.,,,    my two cents, i wouldn't spend the extra money.

The SXP is now available with a 3.5" chamber.
