Police are investigating after two hunters shot and killed a dog near Middle Pond on the Southern Shore Highway on Saturday. Jim Owens says he and his 2-year old black Lab, Quacker went for a run in the woods near his home when she got about 30 feet ahead of his ATV on the narrow path. Owens says he lost sight of the dog in a dip and that's when he heard the shot. He told VOCM Nightline with Pete Soucy he approached two menwho were on either side of the path, who claimed they'd shot at a coyote.
He says he called for his dog and she didn't come. After some searching he found her lying in the alders.
Jim says it's only coincidence that he didn't have his young son with him at the time. He says he's an avid hunter himself and he knows never to hunt coyote on such a narrow path. He says the men had to know they were shooting at a black Lab and not a wild animal.
He says they had 2250s with scopes on them, and had to look through the scope to see what they were shooting at.
Owens says it all happened about a half a kilometre from nearby homes.
Meanwhile, on VOCM Backtalk with Paddy Daly a woman who says she knows the hunters says it was all a terrible mistake.

Really didn't realize there was such resemblance between a black lab and a coyote. i really hope charges are laid
I can promise you if it was my Lab they shot my attitude would have been different for sure, like to know the names of the 2 so called hunters, really puts a bad name to everyone who hunts when this happens.
these people should have pal ,guns ,taken and be charged / banned from carrying a fire arm ,not only that .replacing the dog that they destroyed .My respect goes out to the owner of the labrador for not leaving the 2 yote hunters were they sat ,because other labrador owners would of had a different attitude if you get my drift.....
Mistake? Purposeful? I have a 2 yr old chocolate lab, they would have had to shoot me once i found my dog dead.
they didnt think they were killing a coyote, they thought they were getting away with shooting a Lab...and to be honest, legal or not its mid June. Hunting coyotes now isnt right.Pups are on the ground and nursing.
And for them to say they shot at a coyote......cause we all know a black lab resembles a coyote...... absolutely 0%!!!
There is no excuse for this. As hunters you are completely responsible for what you shoot. And where you send a bullet. Period.
and we wonder why hunters get such a bad wrap. Guess they are right < theres no cure for stupid.
I hope they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
That's what i was thinking, up to the hip and bang.
so ken...it was probbaly one of those "hero hip shots"...Way to go guys....promoting the sport of hunting at the upmost...
Not to mention the fact he was on an ATV....so, the two "hunters" I'll call them, shouldn't have fired anyway when someone was so close to their position...Then again...They probably never heard anything either I guess...
