Its a dandy little gun at 100 yds for sure. And it can be done at 150 but I think you will see a lot of the them take it and run. ( I know you will Ive seen it quite a few times.)
Another thing people often dont pay attention with guns is the bullet itself. By bullet I mean the actual projectile that comes out the barrel of the gun, flies thru the air and hits the target.
Different bullets are designed for different purposes. For example, in the 17 hmr comes in several different brands, I HAVENT TESTED THEM. but I am guessing the CCI 17 TNT would not give you the performance on a coyote sized animal as the Federal V max.
While both are fragible, the TNT is a bullet designed totally for rat, prairie dog sized game, its designed to disintegrate on impact. I doubt it would leave enough rabbit to bother skinning on a centre body shot. Makes for really wild splashes on water filled drink bottle and heads of cabbage. But it would probably not penetrate a coyote if it hit a shoulder.Even at 100 yds.
The Vmax while fragilable will give a bit more penetration.
I bought a 17 HMR earlier this winter( Savage TR) but I havent really had time to do much testing. Its pretty accurate with what I have shot so far. ( 150 rounds) BUT so far its a long ways from as accurate as the 204, 223 and 22-250. nor does have the range or energy.
For me as a reloader the ammo isnt any cheaper in a 17. And I can tailor my ammo for whatever I plan to shoot.
The wind will push it all over the place . Everyone compares them to a 22 and in comparison its miles ahead of a 22 but when compared to the centre fires its light and slow. Wind will play havoc with it.But its fun playing with them at the range.
have you checked out the new 17 winchester super mag rimfire. May be worth waiting on buying that 17 hmr.
