Safety Tips for Boaters as Food Fishery Begins
A water safety expert says being prepared before you hit the water could save your life. The recreational food fishery began today and runs through August 10th and again from September 20th to the 28th. The limit remains five fish per day.
Robert Dupel of BOATERexam.com says hypothermia is the number one killer in boating accidents. He says people underestimate how cold the water is, and because they don't ever imagine going overboard, they only dress for the outdoor weather.
Dupel reminds all boaters to wear a life jacket, he says just having them on board is not good enough.
Before going out on the water, Dupel says you should always let people know where you're going, make sure the boat engine is working properly, and that the boat is secured with all of the equipment on board.
Meanwhile, the NL Injury Prevention Coalition wants to remind people to be safe on the water. Chair Len LeRiche says next week is Drowning Prevention Week, and this weekend they're encouraging people to be careful.
