Moved from Alaska to NL. Where are the Squid!!?!?!

Hello everyone. I just moved here a few months ago from Alaska.

I've been trying to find any bit of information about catching squid (online, but mostly in the real world) anywhere around the island.

I was able to read about NL's rich history of squidding, everything from the most successful year in 1979, how it's cyclical,  the exportation of it to Japan and Russia, how NL families  sustained their families with the fisheries for years etc. but for the freaking life of me, I catch find out where or when I can launch my kayak and go catch some to put in my fridge.

Can anyone with any tiny bit of information help me out here? I know for most of you this is not anything close to what you would consider a sport fishery, but for me it is something that I would enjoy doing, and would enjoy harvesting.

Come to think of it I haven't heard of any squid around this year. Usually late August and September they are in. I'll ask around and see if I can find anything out for.you and let you know.

Hi Peter!

Thanks for the intel! Apparently back in late September they were absolutely slaying them in the sydney harbor in NS. I heard it was bucketful after bucketful night after night for a couple of weeks.
I figured those were the same squid? Or am I mistaken?

I also saw a video on youtube from...cape verde (I think) and the squid seemed HUGE. if they are the same squid, they certainly fatten up before getting here.

Anyways, any info would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's just about migratory patterns etc. Just really curious about these little critters.
But man would I love to get some on the table.

Hey guys, Just wanted to let anybody thinking about chimming know that I check this site every few days. I've been trying really hard to get ANY sort of information about squid fishing but haven't gathered much. If anybody feels like sharing any info, I'll be reading. Thanks!

The squid usually comes in late summer or early fall. To the best of my knowledge that's about the time you can get them. Holyrood is a great place to get them. Nice beach to launch from and the squid are in fairly close. Holyrood has a Squid Festival every summer.

Thanks for the info! I'm gonna check it out. I figured I have a lot of time this summer and I may just visit a few towns by the water and just ask around. Seems like the internet doesnt have ALL the answers!!

Some in Portugal Cove and heard there was some in Bay Bulls

Hello Jonathan! I too have looked for places around here to catch squid. One evening in August I went to the concrete Wharf in Portugal Cove-St.Phillips (Where the Bell Island Ferry crosses) and was talking to some men there who were squid jigging from the wharf. They had caught one already and said most evenings they catch a couple, but this year seemed to have a different species of squid in that wasn't as easy to catch. I hope this helps. It's too bad squid jigging isn't as big of a sport here as other places.
