A tag system was tried before and it created a firestorm of opposition. Thousands of tags ended up on the landwash with discarded heads and it was an environmental mess to say the least. The only reason to use tags is to justify the label recreational as opposed to food which is what this fishery is to the vast majority of Newfoundlanders.   Bureaucrats within DFO,  misguided politicians, and self serving individuals would love to put the food fishery in the same category as salmon angling. This would be a huge mistake and will be met with, as I said, a firestorm of opposition.

Everyone will agree that cod are having a good comeback. Should  cod reach historic population levels, the lucrative crab & shrimp fishery will crash.  Therefore, it is simple logic that a billion dollar industry will be replaced by a million dollar industry.  A sustainable cod population must be balanced with maintaining a crab and already threatened shrimp fishery. The best solution I maintain to a balanced approach in the harvest of cod is to maintain the current system and monitor the fishery using current methods.

I dont think the tag and license system will benefit anyone...except politicians ..The only chance i get to fish for Cod is not the greatest chance because i live in the inner bay of exploits ...cod are not as thick because of the freshwater mixing with the salt...but i do manage to catch enough to put in my ordinary fridge freezer (10 Mid-size fish) a season...would be pointless for me to spend money on a license...

Makes no sense what so ever. Environmental groups are trying to cut down on the amount of plastic in the ocea. Where does the minister think these tags will end up, I can tell you where in the harbors and bays across the province. This entire license and tag system was brought in by the last federal liberal government so I guess history will repeat itself. To make matters worse our province and the North Shore of Quebec are the only Canadians that have to purchase a license to fish cod, the rest of Canada will not be required to purchase the license & tags.
That's an insult.

There is a meeting this evening at 7 at the Capital Hotel on Tags. I intend to be there. As I said, this is a bunch of bureaucrats within DFO and self serving individuals with their own agenda who are influencing misguided politicians  to label this as recreational & enforce authority over Newfoundlander fishers so that we do not get any notion, God forbid, that we have rights. The food fishery doesn't even scratch the cod population. Cod biomass, at current growth will reach historic levels within this decade. Should this happen, you can most definitely kiss the lucrative crab and shrimp fishery goodbye. We  have a choice, sacrifice a billion dollar industry for a million dollar industry or have a sustainable harvest. I propose to improve upon the system currently in place. Tags failed before and it will fail again. It is nuts on every level.

The meeting was a sham. It is a done deal and will be shoved down our throats because there is very little opposition. It is amazing the number of people who think that tags will provide quantifying data for scientific research. How is this possible when the only data that can be attained is the number of tags sold. Newfoundland & Labrador will be the only jurisdiction in Canada that will once again be subjected to this nightmare. Tour operators are in favor of it because they would love to issue tags to their clients and tag their catch. It has a certain stigma to it kind of like catching a salmon. It is a food fishery and not a recreational fishery

I kinda new it was a go. They did to. No one was changing there mind. But if you get 50 tags wounder can you fill them in one day like labrador can. Cut down on gas expenses. Going to be interesting to see. Thanka for the reply.

They will contract out for a limited number of tags and it certainly won't be fifty per license holder.

If its fine for 3 weeks and sometimes it is. We will loose out on fish.

some how i just picture one of us at the meeting giving a heartfelt opinion on why this is a bad idea ..and the minister would be over there with his head down looking at some papers on his  desk and doodling a big $ dollar sign symbol with his pen....
