So im considering picking up a compound bow.  I like the idea of trying it out for moose.  I have a few rookie bow hunter questions tho.

1.  If you hold the bow with your left hand and draw with the right, what "hand" bow do i need?

2.  Whats a good IBO speed for moose?

3.  the RTH (ready to hunt packages), are they already sighted in?

4.  what is the max range for hunting with a bow?  id think 50 yards would be my max.

if anyone has any hints, tips, or advice, please chime in!!!

1. If you draw right hand then you are right handed

2. Generally anything around or over 300 FPS should be fine.  However it's more than just speed, all speed will really do will give you a flatter trajectory and therefore make accurate ranging a little less fine.  For example a shorter lighter arrow will give more FPS but not always more penentration.  Much like shot size in hunting, NUmber 8 shot at 1500 FPS will not have the same downrange energy as BB's at 1300 FPS since the BB's are heavier.  Legally you need a bow with 45 LBS draw, and anything over that should be adequate for moose.  Depending on your fitness and the type of bow you are shooting you can go with heavier draw weights, the compounds have "let off" which reduce the holding weight at full draw as opposed to recurve/straight bows.  Most would opt for 60 LBS plus for moose hunting.  Much more critical is shot placement.

3. I would assume they are NOT sighted in.  Since everyone has different draw lengths, anchor points, release, and arrows then it would require some tuning to zero it in.

4. Again this depends on what gear you are shooting and downrange retained energy.  Since shot placement is much more important then you need to restrict it to what you are able to shoot and hit the proverbial pie plate.  Don't expect to pick up the bow and make that 50 yd shot, most have trouble at 20 yds beginning.  But with practice 50 yds is reasonable for most shooters.  The bows today can deliver enough energy to take the animal down, as long as the shooter can put it in there.

The RTH bow packages come already setup and tuned and they are sighted in, the RTS (ready to shoot) comes all set up but as for sighting they just get it hitting the paper you need to fine tune it yourself . As for the range it would depend on what you are hunting, and your bow setup, personally I wouldnt go anymore then 40yds with a moose with a bow with 60lb draw.

You can shoot at any range but depends on if you are sure that you can hit at that range 50 is probably the most you would shoot to kill.  the .And if you will make sure that it will be a kill and not a wounded animal running around with a arrow in its side.Should set your pins to 20 - 30 and 40 yards if u have a 3 pin sight. In canada you need atleast a 1 inch broadhead cut for it to be legal.I got a ready to hunt bow and it was not sighted in. But its easy to do so long as the bow is all squared up.Just start at 10 yards and fire 3 arrows. Watch were they go and move your sight to adjust. The best arrow that you can use is a carbon fiber arrow. The go much faster then aluminum arrows and get alot more penetration then the aluminum counter part.Make sure that u get a good release for your bow to that can hold the draw weight out the bow.And most of all practice practice practice all the time.
