Brendan,
We usually use 3 or 4 strings of decoys with about 8 or 10 birds on each, mostly eider decoys but have used black duck ones. They are placed aprox 10 to 15 (front) yards off depending on how rough the water is with the tale end around 25-30 yards, closer to shore the closer they come in. The spread could be around 15 to 20 yards wide. The shape usually is a square out in front. We hunt of the north east coast, usually lots of birds here, use a boat to get to the outter islands and then land on shore. The places we hunt are points that run off further from the land, The wind usually is blowing off the point causing the decoys to stay offshore and apart from each other. Use boat to pick up birds, have seen days where 6 of us have killed 36 in an hour. I know some guys that are using flags, say the work good. I made some haven't had the chance to use the yet, I put some pics in the group decoys. White camo along snow covered shores works well. Got some pics but need to get the scaned so I can post them.
Shane.
