Let's stick to the Facts and not let emotion run rampant. The facts as I see it is that it is an expensive venture that did nothing to prevent the crimes it was supposed to! But, What do think?

Ithink your wright,,goverment wasteing millions of tax payers money

The long gun registry is nothing but a money grab targeting law abiding citizens.  Did you see what happened in Australia?  When the confiscated their guns the crime rate went up over 90%.  There is well over two billion dollars wasted on a system riddled with errors to numurous to mention.  I myself had 11 guns registered to me that I did not own, some fun trying to straighten up that mess when the person on the other end of the line is argung with me & telling me my X husband is my brother....

Crimminals do not registry their guns.

If they wanted to make the streets safer all they had to do was use that money to put more police on the streets.

I heard that without the registry, places like Walmart and Canadian Tire would start selling firearms and ammo. Not sure I like that idea, even though it would make for more competitive pricing. What would happen to the stores who specialize in those products?

Neil,

Walmart and Canadian tire used to carry Firearms, up and until the new regulations back in the 1990's. The rules became so tangly and they backed away from them. They never did have any major impact of local gun retailers,  to my knowledge. Now I feel old, LOL

How do you think I feel. I remember buying guns in almost any general stores here in New Hr and surrounding areas

You should check out this link!  This was the libs long term plans!!

There is no mistaking where the Liberals are with respect to gun control. They are clearly on record. In the words of Michael Ignatieff.. The Liberals remain committed to "Strict " and relentless gun control"

Keep in mind that right now before parliment ( but vote is postponed until 2012) but they will have to decide. What is proposed.?? Canadian Gun Importers would be required to stamp on the guns a country code and the date of importing. Note manufacturers will not stamp the guns as they dont ultimately know where a gun is destined when its made.

it is estimated that this process to be done properly will cost upwards of $200 per gun.

Note that since 1990 almost half of firearms businesses closed thier doors, dropping from 9209 in 2000 to 4720 in 2009. This will have more closing.

Its interesting to note that Statistics Canada info shows that on average 13 homocide guns a year are traceable thru the registry system and whether any of these traces are of actual use in crime solving remains unanswered.

interesting to note that approx 170 homocides are committed a year in Canada with firearms, this includes accidents and suicides.

another good read....take a moment and read this.

WOW! Fred, it is definitely food for thought. can you imagine coming home to someone in your home and harming your wife or children and when you defend your family getting arrested? where is the justice in that! In the US constitution you are allowed to defend your family and your property. This however was purposely left out of our constitution. Why? Why are our families and homes not protected, why are we considered criminals if we defend the very people that are needing it the most? Ed

While it is not in a Canadian Constitution it is in the Crimal Code of Canada. You are allowed to defend yourself. The issue here is the fact that the Police and crown attorneys are putting in court and inflicting the costs of defending yourself. Sure ultimately you may win but financially you are ruined.

But note the overiding plan here and it resonates right down thru to the Registry and Licensing System. They cannot legislate the guns out of your hands but they can make it so expensive and prohibitive that people stop bothering.

The money spent on the long gun registry would have put a lot more cops on the street plus a helicopter for every major city in canada, and it did not work for the four mountiies in alberta
