More than 5,000 moose licences added

The Newfoundland and Labrador government significantly raised the number of moose it will allow to be killed in this year's hunt, a day after Parks Canada lifted a moratorium in two of its parks.

The government said it will add an extra 5,020 licences, bringing the total quota to 33,645. Most of the licences are dedicated to Newfoundland with 205 reserved for Labrador.

Most of the new licences are targeted to areas along the Trans-Canada Highway and major regional highways "in an attempt to counteract the number of moose-vehicle incidents that are occurring," Environment and Conservation Minister Ross Wiseman said in a statement.

Hunters will, for the first time, be allowed to legally shoot moose in Gros Morne National Park in western Newfoundland and in Terra Nova National Park in eastern Newfoundland.

The government said 530 licences will involve areas in the parks, and that hunting will be allowed in an area called the Charlottetown Enclave, which includes land near and in Terra Nova National Park.

so does this also allow you to use an all terrain vehicle to access the downed animal?

I had the same question Jamie in an early post....They are not releasing many details regarding the Park hunts at all. Just that the license are going to be awarded by the draw process.

I wonder how many are resident hunter licenses and how many will be outfitter licenses. I still think this will start the depopulation of moose on the Island!  It will also give motorists a false sense of security, for the short term and once more vehicle collisions happen more licenses will be issued! But, that is just my opinion, What do you think? ED

honestly...how many moose vehicle collisions do you hear about through gros morne???  nearly zero.  these people are used to living with the moose and they have adapted their driving.  motorists here on the avalon, and more eastern parts of the island are not adapting, and the moose numbers are significantly lower.  like a mountie said to me before...its not that the drivers are "speeding" but speed is the number one factor in every moose vehicle collision he has investigated.  if its 5am, dusky in the morning, and u r doing 100kph on the tch...thats too fast.  personally im tired of hearing eugene nippards comments in the news.  id compare him to the crowd that are trying to stop the seal hunt, only he is against the animals.  the governnment could wipe out the moose and it still wouldnt be enough for him. 

 

is giving 5000 licenses the answer to the moose issue in the park.  NO!  can you imagine how many hunters are going to be running into other hunters in the park?  thats too many people in a small area with loaded weapons.  I have seen some extremely bad habbits from other hunters when they see a moose.  they go crazy...all they see is the moose, not the people standing behind it, not the roadway....id say we will be damn lucky if no one gets killed or has a near miss in the park this fall.

 

my suggestion would be open the park up for hunting...and do 1000 licenses a year for 5 years and re-evaluate.  500 ES and 500 MO/CALF.  that way there will be moose taken out of the ecosystem, without it being a huge shock to it; you arent endangering the hunters in the woods; and you are adding to the economy of newfoundland and labrador.

I think you are spot on with the safety aspect Jamie, there are going to be 5000 extra guns running around the roads, I hope I am wrong but I would say there is going to be more hunting accidents this year due to the high number of hunters in a small area.

Only 530 licences for the parks, the other 4470 presumably for the remainder of the island.

i for one see no problem with this in areas alot of the moose are starving to the point were you can see there ribs i see this cull helping the heard more then hurting it.All populations have there peaks and drops in population due to preadtors sickness and lack of food.With lack of preadtors there population will grow tell they die from mass over population and then suffer from wide spread desesis.Which will inturn drop the population down to a lower amount then taking a extra 5000 from the heard this year.So in turn i see this as helping lesson the greater of the 2.

if you go to the link for the 2011-2012 hunting guide...the 5000 licenses are spread all ofer the island...not just in the parks.

 

and...you still cant use an atv to get the downed animal.  which in turn limits the hunters.
