We are looking to buy a coyote rifle. We are wondering what one is best, 223 or a 22-250?

Does the 223 bullet drop more than the 22-250 at say, 200 or 300 yards?

Anyone have any brand perference, Savage, Remimgton etc? Any know problems or things to look out for?

Please let us know the benefit of your experience?

I have a savage edge in 223 and its a great bang for the buck!!!!!

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH TYSON I HAVE ONE AS WELL USEING  VITAL SHOCK 55 GRAIN AMMO

Wholesale sports has them on sale now for $249.

I would recomend a 223, they are very powerfull and straight shooting guns, the 22-250 has a little more power but the ammo is double the price. I have seen people take 400 yd shots with 223 and hit the target dead on. I have a Norinco, it was the best deal when i bought it 8 yrs ago, have not had a hitch with it since, but like Tyson said, I think the savage is the best bang for the buck.
I have a 22-250 savage edge fired about 10 boxes through it so far and no problems yet the despute between the 223 and the 22-250 is like yamaha and honda or ford and chev its what you perfer in the end both are excellent rifles for coyote hunting just my 2 cents worth lol
Thanks b'ys.

Both rounds have their trade-offs. The .22-250 has the superior ballistics, which translates to higher velocity and muzzle energy, as well as a flatter trajectory and less drop at longer range. However the ammunition is quite a bit more expensive. The .223 is much cheaper, but it doesn't have quite the ballistics of the .22-250.

Having said this, the simple act of sighting in your scope compensates for the effects of bullet drop in the .223, and there isn't a coyote on earth that's going to dance out of the way of a .223 round or shrug off a hit. The military chose the .223 (5.56 mm NATO) cartridge as its main infantry combat round for a reason. It's capable of taking out human-sized targets at several hundred yards.

All things considered, my vote goes to the .223 for these reasons.

Good answer Chris.

actually the whole 223 versus 22_250 argument has changed with the introduction of the faster twist barrels that are now available in the 223. The faster twists allows the 223 to use heavier bullets. When using the heavier bullet in the 223 at extended ranges the 223 will actually outperform the 22-250 ballistically and energy wise.

In the world of target shooting 223 is often used for shooting beyond a thousand yards. in the real world the difference there is little or no difference in either. Ballistically at 300 yds theres maybe a 3 inch trajectory difference and thats less than the capabilty of the shooter.

all good stuff

Picked up a Savage 223 today. We can't wait to try it out now.
hey 22 -223 stevens and i swear by it lol

I have a 223 stevens rifle , just shot my first coyote with it , It was at least 200 yards away and it hit dead on..
