Initiatives aimed to reduce moose-vehicle collisions announced

The provincial government announced today it will spend $5 million for a series of initiatives hoped to reduce the number of moose-vehicle collisions in Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to a news release, it will include the launch of pilot projects involving wildlife fencing and wildlife detection systems, as well as the immediate enhancement of ongoing brush clearing and public awareness efforts.

I sent everyone in the house a letter telling them how the BC wildlife protection program works. I hope they use the money in places where it is needed

The promotion of   common sense behind the wheel through TV advertising and other media outlets is where most of this money needs to be spent.

Couldn't agree with you more. No need of a wildlife fence destroying our provinces beauty. People should just slow down and pay more attention. The brush clearing has helped a lot and I think clearing along with the sensor warning system is a much better alternative to the fence.

The reason we have so many moose accidents is speed. People drive too fast. They don't factor in the possibility that a 1000-1500lb animal may walk in front of them.

 

I've fished salmon for years, and often during my early morning commutes, I've counted upwards of 25 moose. During the summer of course. But my point is, I've made this commute for about 4 years. It's around 2 hours, and I have not come close to hitting one moose yet. If you are cautious you won't strike moose, it is as simple as that!

 

People need to slow down. They have high moose densities in Alaska but you don't see people there lobbying to wipe the moose out. They cope with the problem, and slow down. Same with Sweden.

 

Yes, I do know people who have hit moose. Family members in fact. But even they admitted that they were traveling too fast given the circumstances. Sometimes we can't avoid hiting them, but 9/10 times if you adjust your speed, you will NOT hit moose.

 

But if we are going to wipe the moose out because they are not native, why not wipe out the cars too? And wipe out the residents while we're at it. This whole "kill all the moose" business is foolishness.
