"... fishing villages along Newfoundland's rocky shores became known for producing a hardy strain of water dogs. By the mid-1800s, Newfoundland's retrievers were in high demand for their intelligence and strong swimming ability. As a result of this popularity, Newfoundland is the origin of several modern retrievers." Bill Nichol, Born to Hunt:

The thing to remember is that a setter 'points" because he cant catch the bird. There are a lot of ways to get him pointing. It can be as simple as taking him on barrens and letting him flush partridge over and over.
I like to use pen raised birds.(quail) Lot easier than walking your butt off trying to find partridge.
BUT if you chose to use wild birds. Snipe are easier to find than partridge.

Its not hard to do but its long to type. Where are you located. Maybe we can talk about it sometime.

The last Setter I had was 23 years ago. Ken & Fred, I think would be able tell you all you need to know. "Just a thought" might be a good idea to hook up, if you guys are in the same area. Good luck with the setter.

Jonathan the next time I am talking to a friend of mind with the Partridge Forever Society, I ask him and get his opinion.

any tips on breaking a setter?
Comment by Peter Emberley on July 10, 2010 at 9:34pm
Good looking pup. I would start him as soon as you can. I beleave the 1st of September you can run him. The more the better. Its pretty exciting to hear them bark on a rabbit for the first time. I am looking forward to hearing how the pup is doing as the season progresses. Good luck with it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I may not know the answer but I will do my best to find out.

Congrats on the new puppy. I definately think its time to begin. Hunting season will be here before you know it and I am not a big believer in trying to hunt and train at same time.
How has your obedience training coming along.? I believe you should have a very firm foundation in obeience before you begin. COME, SIT, STAY and HEEL should be very firm. I am a big believer in the DOWN command as well. If yourobedience isnt firm now, it wont get any better when guns start blazing on opening day

At this point you also have clear in your mind exactly what you will be expecting from your dog.STEADY to wing and shot.? do you want to be able to CAST your dog?
Will you be handling your dog from a remote location( your in one spot the dog in another.
Give some thought as to exactly what you want from your dog. For me COME, Heel,Stay and DOWN are critical commands.Without a firm basis in OB feild training is much harder to do.
Take a week and firm up the Basic Obedience. Then start. I would suggest you get your hands on a couple good programs and then START.

Vince tell us a little more about your pup and then maybe we can help. What are your goals with him i.e. Hunting dog? Is he from field/water proven parents or show stock? What have you been doing with him up to now. For now it is never too early to start exposing the pup to as much as you can including the fields and water.
