Once it starts up again in a few days try using a nymph like I suggested and fish it sub surface with a strike indicator like the "Thingamabobber", fish this time of year won't generally rise for a dry fly, simply because there are no insects on the surface yet, so trying to rise one with a dry fly is going to be hard. PM me and I'll send you some pictures of patterns I use, that way we don't fill everyone's in-box with updates from this group.
Just a reminder for everyone that the ice fishing season opens on Feb 1st for the Avalon. Just remember the same as winters before, we have had alot of cold weather but we have also had alot of warm weather and rain so please be sure to check the ice before venturing out on the pond.
On the Waterford the Clouser Minnow works well, don't over complicate things keep the patterns simple, use small black flies with a bit of silver rib and black hackle, or one in the same style red. Just take a look in the water under the rocks and around the banks for nymphs and other bugs then just match what they look like. It's not like trying to catch salmon where you almost have to stimulate them with different colors and patterns (they're in the rivers to spawn not feed), trout just eat whatever is in the local area.
@tyler stacey, thanks forthe help appreciate it ! does anyone know some good flies for some brown trout ?
Thanks buddy; hopefully I'll get some bigger ones this winter.
Nice trout.
@Brandon Purcell forgot to mention I prefer to use a Royal Wulff when fishing in Great Pond, but I find brown terrestrial types work good as well.
Theres lots of places, Great Pond in Torbay holds some big trout (I'm talking 5+ lbs) check the Newfoundland and Labrador angler's guide for a full list of places. ( http://www.nfl.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/e0005597 )
